Joy Thornley

December 25, 1929 — October 25, 2013

Joy Irene Irish Thornley completed her earthly mission on October 25, 2013 in her home in Hyde Park, Utah and returned to her loving Father in Heaven and loved ones. She began her earthly mission on December 25, 1929 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was greeted by a wonderful brother who was a best friend all of her life. Her parents were Le Roy Wooding Irish and Viola Paget Irish.
Joy spent most of her early years in Salt Lake City, attending school there and graduating from Granite High School. She loved to sing even as a small child, so all through her life she participated in many groups, choruses, and choirs. She especially loved to sing the hymns in church. Whenever she could, she attended choir performances.
She expressed daily her gratitude for the beautiful world our kind Heavenly Father provided for us, and so enjoyed traveling to see outstanding beautiful places, as well as learning about the many unique places in the world.
Joy had a good life with her family, going on many trips in the family car and working together at household cleaning, yard work, and raising a garden. As a family and as individuals they experienced several trials, but with faith in the Lord they were able to continue their earthly growth and enjoy the help, peace, and comfort the Lord provided.
After graduating from high school, Joy was employed by Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co. in Salt Lake City, doing work in an accounting department. She worked there for four years, until she received a mission call in 1953 from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to serve in the Eastern States Mission. During her mission she participated two times in the Hill Cumorah Pageant.
After returning from her mission, she came to Logan, Utah to attend Utah State Agricultural College. She didn’t graduate, but met her future husband, W. Ray Thornley, who graduated in June 1956. Soon after graduation, Ray was employed by North American Aviation in Los Angeles. Ray and Joy were married in the Los Angeles temple by Ray’s former mission president. They made their home in the Los Angeles area (El Segundo and Altadena) for three years, then in the Salt Lake City area for about seven years before moving to Cache Valley, where Joy spent the rest of her life.
Together she and Ray had seven wonderful children who brought much satisfaction to them. Joy was a talented seamstress who delighted in making clothing for herself and her children, and also making costumes, and draperies for her home. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and made a shawl for each new grandchild.
No matter where they lived, Joy was always involved in the church, serving in many different callings and influencing many lives, including her own. She had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and His Atonement for all mankind. She spent several days each week serving at the Logan Family Search Library (formerly the Logan Family History Center) for 17 years. She enjoyed finding information about her own family lines as well as helping others find exciting information about their families.
Joy is survived by her loving, tender husband of 57 years, Ray Thornley, by seven children, Diann Read (Jon), Janis Lapides (Richard), David (Cheryl Leyh), Phyllis Gibson (Buddy), Ruthann DeMille (David), Paul (Liesl Norton), and Sharon Schnell (Ken). A foster Navajo son, Victor Mannie, also lived with them for seven years. Joy has 25 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her only brother, Glen Lewis Irish, and his wife Effie, and a brother- and sister-in-law, Robert and Velda Thornley.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Vera Carlsen, and the staff of Rocky Mountain Care (Hospice) for their loving care of their wife and mother.
Services will be held at 12:00 (noon) on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Hyde Park northwest chapel at 480 North 100 West. A viewing will be held on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Allen Mortuary of North Logan, 420 East 1800 North, and prior to the services on Saturday at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery.
At Joy’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.
