Joyce Ellen Tarr Baker, beloved matriarch of her family, peacefully passed away on Sunday July 14, 2024 at the age of 96. Born in England amidst the tumult of war, Joy experienced hardship and displayed resilience from a young age. She bravely endured the trials of wartime England, where bombs often shook the streets of her youth.

Joy’s life took a beautiful turn when she met Laurence Baker, an American GI serving in Great Britain, her devoted husband and lifelong companion. Together, they embraced their faith in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, finding strength and solace in their shared beliefs. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and commitment.

A dedicated gardener and talented knitter. Joy’s hands created beauty everywhere they touched. Many of her family members have worn her knitted work and decorated their homes with her embroidery. Her passion for her English roots and love for gardening remained constants throughout her life. She had a love of fine music and a beautiful singing voice. The scent of lavender and the sweet indulgence of chocolate brought her simple joys amidst the busyness of family life.

Her faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ guided her every decision and action, shaping her into the remarkable woman she was. Joy leaves behind a large and loving family who will forever cherish her and her memory and strive to live as she did—with grace, kindness, and unwavering faith.

She is survived by her children Anne Finwall (Richard Finwall), David Baker (Renee Sippel-Baker), Margaret Stones (Larry Stones), Brenda Patrick (Hal Keller), Roger Baker (Lenora Baker), and many grand children, great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by one brother, Ray Olsen (Carolyne Olsen).

Joy Baker’s legacy of love and unwavering faith will forever remain in the hearts of those who were privileged to know her.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 11:00, with a viewing starting at 10:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 480 N. 100 W, Hyde Park, Utah.
