Joyce Anne Van Horn Somers, age 68 of Hyrum, Utah, passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah.
Joyce was born on April 18, 1955 in Newport Beach, California to James William Van Horn and Edna Marie Lane Van Horn. Joyce later moved to Paradise, California at the age of 18 after the death of her father.
While there, she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in March of 1975 and then decided to serve an LDS mission one year later to the Texas, Dallas Mission.
Joyce later met and married Michael Oliver Somers in June 1979. She began her career by working at the Logan Regional Hospital. After retiring from the Logan Regional Hospital, Joyce became a hospice care giver. This brought her much joy because she loved serving and helping those she cared for.
Later she found the art of quilt making which gave her the joy and opportunity to make quilts for children living in Ukraine and Africa. She would also make quilts for the military personnel.
She loved her garden and sharing all of her vegetables she grew with her neighbors. Many people were benefited by the candy Joyce would make for Christmas. She would make and sell candy while all the money made would go to her grandchildren.
Joyce loved the outdoors. She enjoyed hiking with her family. Backpacking became a real joy to her and even had the opportunity to hike Mount Whitney which is the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states. She hiked the Wind Rivers where she got caught in a forest fire.
She is survived by her husband Michael and her children: James (Katlynne) and Jo, eight grandchildren, Jordyan, Ryan, Addilynn, Mason, Kennadee, Bostyan, Parker, Taylor.
She is preceded in death by her father James, mother Edna and siblings: Jim and Max.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 25th at 11:00 a.m. at the Hyrum City Cemetery, 525 E. Main St. in Hyrum. To read the full obituary go to
