Providence, Utah - On December 6, 2024, Judith Gail Martin passed away in her sleep after a valiant fight with Alzheimer’s. She was 83.

Born on December 10, 1940, in Elkins, West Virginia, Judy, as she was known to family and friends, was the oldest of six brothers and sisters, born to Kathryn Gail and Richard P. Hedrick. She was raised in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, eventually graduating from Greenbank High School in 1958.

After graduation she moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for the FBI, sharing an apartment with other young women and enjoying life in the city. In 1961 she married Donovan E. Shrader, who she had known since first grade and dated in high school.

She was always very proud of the work she did for the FBI and, subsequently, for the IRS, in her early adulthood. A few years later the couple moved to Virginia to start a family and Judy went from proud working woman to prouder stay-at-home mom. A job transfer took the young family to California. They remained there until the late 1970s when Judy divorced Shrader and moved to Alliance, Ohio, to be near her parents.

Judy raised her four children in Alliance as a single mom, while working as a secretary at Mount Union College. In 1981 she married Vern Martin. They divorced in 2012.

Seeking out another adventure, Judy moved to Providence, Utah that same year to be near her daughter Pam and her family. Judy loved her new life, attending church, spending time with her daughters—her daughter, Cindy, relocated to Cache Valley, too—and her grandchildren. Family was always tremendously important to Judy and it showed in the countless ways she looked after her children and grandchildren. As “Grandma Judy,” she was revered for her kindness, tasty snacks, and her trusty red van that carted grandkids all over Cache Valley.

Faith was also important to her. Judy was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved attending church and the temple, seeing her daughters married for time and all eternity, supporting her grandsons on their missions, and always putting Christ first in her life.

Several years ago, Judy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It was a scary moment for her and her family, but as always, she faced it with the good nature, dignity and courage with which she typically lived her life. She spent her last year as a resident of Cache Valley Assistant Living in Providence. And, true to form, it wasn’t long before she was best friends with her dining room table group at CVAL. It was especially sweet for her family, in Judy’s final days, to see how those ladies would come by her apartment to express their love, hold her hand, or just be there with her.

Her family is also grateful for the love and care CVAL’s staff showed to Judy during her time there. Shanna, Becky, Tammi, Jan and the rest of the staff were incredible and made the difficult moments easier. We will always be grateful.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Kathryn, brother Randy, and sister, Dolores. She is survived by her brother Richard (Erma), sisters Karen and Kathy (Charlie), and her children, Cindy (Frank), Steve, Pam (Ron) and David (Cita), twelve grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

A viewing for Judy will occur from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 am, on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street in Logan. Interment will take place at the Millville Cemetery after the service.
