June Jenks Mathews

October 13, 1920 — November 24, 2006

June Mathews passed away peacefully at her home in Providence, Utah on a beautiful Friday morning November 24, 2006.
June was born October 13, 1920 to Alice Smith Jenks and William Lavon Jenks in Fairview, Idaho. Her mother died of Typhoid Fever when she was 3 years old, and she was raised by her grandparents Wallace and Lucy Jenks in Young Ward, Cache County Utah. She married and was sealed to Ray Winn Mathews on Dec 2, 1938 in the Logan LDS Temple then moved to Providence where she lived and raised their 3 children and millions of beautiful plants. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Vernal.

June is survived by her daughter Jolene (J. Dean Shaffer) her son Devon R. (Diane) and her daughter Debbie (Todd A. Brown) 13 grandchildren 28 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, not to mention carefully potted geraniums waiting for spring plantings.

This dear grandmother always showed sincere love and concern for all her grandchildren.
June was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving as Work Director and Visiting Teacher in the Relief Society
June loved flowers. She spent hours year round culturing and pruning her flowers or garden for the benefit of others. She taught her family and others by example the importance of perfection in caring for her garden. No weed was safe, neither picked nor unpicked as she poured over every inch of her garden.
June’s craving for service was exemplified every Christmas season as she and Ray would prepare hundreds of home dipped chocolates delivering many plates to their friends and family.
Sewing for her children and her grandchildren was another of her passions. She sewed custom draperies at a private drapery shop and worked for Bernina Fabric in Logan for years and was well known for her expertise in sewing matters. She made quilts for all her children and grandchildren When asked where she learned to sew she did not remember every being taught but was self perfected.
A friend once said “that the best things come in small packages, this sister (June) is small in stature, but has a heart large as a mountain, filled with love, charity and compassion for everyone.”
