PROVIDENCE, UTAH: J. Burke Gunnell, 88, passed away peacefully of natural causes incident to age on May 15, 2014 in Providence, Utah.
He was born June 20, 1925 in Logan, Utah , the third of nine children to Joshua B. and Hazel Heninger Gunnell. He married Verneta Schenk on November 13, 1949. He was an “old fisherman who married the catch of his life”
Burke attended school in Logan and at the tender age of 17 ran away and joined the US Navy. He told his mother, “don’t worry, I have my Book of Mormon with me” He spent his military service in the Pacific Theater as a port-waist machine gunner in a B24 bomber.
After working at the Logan Post Office for many years, he became the Postmaster at the Providence Post Office until his retirement.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served in many callings. He also worked at the Logan Temple.
He is survived by his wife Verneta; his children, Mark (Carol); Mary Ann (Michael); Noreen (Kevin); Val (Cindy); Carolee (Scott); Troy (Denise); Ranae (David); 40 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Roger Burke and a great granddaughter, Maliya Jade Gunnell.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 am in the Cobblestone 2nd Ward chapel, 420 West 100 North, Providence There will be a viewing on Monday evening from 6-8 pm at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan and at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 - 10:30 am.
