Kay Delore Johnson

February 17, 1921 — June 7, 2016

Kay DeLore Johnson, age 95, passed into the next world on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at Legacy House in Logan.  He was born on Feb. 17, 1921, in Thatcher, Idaho, the 8th child in a family with 11 children.  His parents were Charles Everett Johnson and Media Sophia Andersen.  He spent the early part of his life in small communities in Montana.
When he was 13 years old, his parents divorced and he and 4 of his siblings moved with their Mother to Hyrum, Utah, and he lived with his Uncle, Levi Andersen until he graduated from South Cache High School.
He joined the Navy when our country got involved in World War II.  He was a radioman.  He served on 3 different ships:  The USS Neosho, the USS Fremont, and the USS Estes.  He participated in the Philippine Liberation, and Iwo Jima and Okinawa operations, among others.
After the War, Dad went to college.  He started at USU, and then transferred to University of Utah, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Economics.
He married our Mother, Bee Gough, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on May 4, 1949.  They were the parents of 8 children.
Most of his working life was spent as an accountant.  For many years, he had his own business, a bookkeeping service, in the basement of our home.  Later, he and Mom were Church custodians, together.
Our Dad was a man of Faith.  He and Mom prayed for their family and did their very best to live the way they should, giving us a great example to follow.
He was a hard worker.  We kids always used to joke that our Dad worked for fun.  He always had the biggest garden that he could fit in our yard and insisted that we all help with the planting, the up keep, and the harvest.
He was, indeed, a part of "The Greatest Generation."  He grew up during the Great Depression, He volunteered to serve in the Navy during World War II, and he lived a life of self-reliance and integrity.  He was a wonderful father to 8 children.
Dad was preceded in death by our Mother, Bee, his parents, a daughter, Betty Jean Johnson, a granddaughter, Melody Johnson, and 9 siblings:  Roma Hyden, Eloise Cummings, Evert Johnson, Rex Johnson, Lima Neal, Lloyd Johnson, Grant Johnson, Cloe Lewis, and Jean Jaggi.
He is survived by a brother, Don (Carol) Johnson of Hyde Park, 7 children:  Ruth (Duane) Jensen of Logan, David (Suzie) Johnson of Santaquin, Janice (Mike) Mikkelsen of Smithfield, James (Pam) Johnson of Midvale, Timothy (Robin) Johnson of Hyrum, Wesley (Margaret) Johnson of Hyrum, and Mary Ann (Randy Kontz) of Layton, 24 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren.
We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to Dr. Robert Nash and also the amazing staff of Logan's Legacy House for their kind and patient care of our Dad.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 in the Hyrum 4th Ward Chapel, 245 Apple Drive in Hyrum. A viewing will be held on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street in Logan, and prior to the services on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the church.
