Kelly Joe Packer

April 7, 1962 — August 24, 2014

Kelly Joe Packer, our beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away August 24, 2014 in Salt Lake City, UT at the age of 52 after a lengthy illness. Kelly Joe was born in Logan, UT on April 7, 1962 to Lynn Bowen Packer and Sandra Sue Follett. He was the proud big brother of five younger siblings. Together they shared many happy childhood memories of hunting, fishing, horseback riding, camping, and dutch oven dinners. He enjoyed the scouting program and was proud to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Sky View High School in 1980 and was honored to serve a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Tulsa, OK.
He married Mary Ann Stephens in the Logan Temple on September 6, 1985. They were later divorced but remained the best of friends. After they were married, he continued his education at Utah State University where he graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Family and Human Development. He was a Special Education teacher in the Salt Lake City area for many years and greatly enjoyed the students he worked with.
Kelly Joe’s greatest love was his two sons, Joshua and Austin. He spent his life teaching them the gospel and being a good example to them. They were his pride and joy. He was an active member of the Church and served in many capacities. He had an incredible love for the scriptures and spent many hours reading them with his sons. He could quote scriptures verbatim and was anxious to share his testimony with anyone who would listen. His testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ never wavered in spite of the many challenges that he faced throughout his lifetime. He exemplified Christ-like love and was always willing to serve those around him.
He enjoyed writing and won awards for his poetry and short stories. He was a grand story teller and made us all laugh with his incredible sense of humor. He loved spending time with his family, watching westerns, the outdoors, horseback riding, country music, family reunions, and life! He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Kelly Joe is survived by his two sons Joshua (Mackenzie) Packer and Austin Packer (currently serving an LDS mission in Kingston, Jamaica), grandsons Lincoln and Noah Packer, siblings Kraig (Kathy) Packer, Kevin (Jode) Packer, Korey (Heidi) Packer, Konie (Craig) Humphreys, Kamie (Farish) Thompson, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Lynn and Sue Packer.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 30th, in the North Logan 9th Ward Building, 1650 East 2600 North, North Logan, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
