Kendalll H Carlson

October 17, 1929 — September 12, 2012

Kendall H. Carlson 1929-2012.
Kendall H. Carlson, our great brother, uncle, and generous friend and neighbor, passed from this life peacefully on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Logan Nursing and Rehab at the age of 82 due to complications incident to old age. Ken was born October 17, 1929 in Logan, Utah to Victor August Carlson and Eva Leona Hansen, the seventh of fourteen children. He was a life- long resident of Richmond, Utah, growing up working hard on the farm and in his father’s sawmill, which he dearly loved. He loved to fish in mountain streams and hunt. Upon graduating from North Cache High School, Ken served in the U.S. Army as a Chaplain’s assistant from 1948 to 1953 stationed in Fort Ord, California. Ken was married, had one son, and divorced shortly thereafter.
In the late 1950’s, his brother, Doyle, invited Ken to come to Kenai Alaska to help with his commercial salmon fishing operation. Thus began Ken’s own adventure working in Alaska. In time, Ken purchased his own beach fishing site, cleared the land, built cabins, storage sheds, and a 105 -step stairway to traverse the sea wall, and mastered the art of set-net commercial salmon fishing. He handled the equipment with expertise and wisdom and had seven tractors and several small boats. Most years he would winter in Richmond, then head to Alaska in early spring over the then- mostly-unpaved Alaskan Highway. Over the years, Ken hired his brother and wife, nephews, nieces, and friends to work for him during the summers on the fish site. Legend are the stories and memories that many shared with Ken during those summers. Due to health problems he retired from his 40+ years in the fishing business in 2001. Ken was very generous with those whom he employed helping fund many college educations and missions.
Another passion of Ken’s was designing and building swing sets. During the winter months in Richmond, he welded and built parts for his famous swing sets, which he gave away to family and close friends. He generously gave away trampolines to nieces, nephews, and friends. He refused to ever accept money for them. He made many friends wherever he went.
Ken was a member of the LDS faith and had a deep love for the gospel, the Savior, and temple work. He delighted in reading and studying the scriptures, and other religious books. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed hearing and sharing funny stories.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers; LaMarr (Donna), Don (Elaine), Victor, and Howard, and by one sister: Jeanne Johnson (Ross). Surviving his humor are his siblings: Doyle (Helen), Carol Larsen (Boyd), Tess Christensen (Wade), Thad (Carroll), Reta Rowland (Sam), Carl (Rochelle), Druce Cluff (Lee), and Joe (Kaye).
The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the staff at the VA hospital, Community Nursing Services Home and Hospice Care, and Logan Nursing and Rehab, for their compassionate care over the past few years and weeks.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept 17th at noon in the Richmond Stake Center, 135 W. Main Street, with a viewing on Sunday, Sept. 16th from 6-8 p.m., and Monday prior to services from 10:30-11:30, with both viewings at the Stake Center. Interment will be in the Richmond Cemetery with military honors.
