Laurens Henry Smith, Sr. January 12, 1921 – April 22, 2011 Laurens Henry Smith, Sr., 90, of Cove Utah, passed away on April 22, 2011 in Logan, Utah. He was the husband of Betty (Brunell) Smith who survives him. They were married on October 15, 1949. Born in Danielson, CT, on January 12, 1921, he was the son of the late Henry Laurens and Faustina (duBois) Smith. After completing ten years of education in the Killingly School System, he went on to complete the course of study for carpentry at the Putnam State Trade School in 1940. In 1952, he received a Statement of Eligibility to teach Carpentry in the Connecticut technical-trade schools. He was sworn into the Army on June 23, 1942, and served as an Airplane and Engine Mechanic on C-47 and C-53 type aircraft while serving on the British Gold Coast, Africa. He later served as a Technical Supply Clerk with the rank of Sergeant in Colorado until his honorable discharge on November 16, 1945. During his service he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the European Theater Ribbon, a Rifle Commendation, and Sharpshooter Medal. In 2010 he received the Connecticut Veterans Wartime Service Medal. His name was entered into the World War II Memorial Registry of Remembrances on September 1, 2000. He spent his life in the building trade as a carpenter. His later career was as an owner’s representative and clerk of the works on many Connecticut school and senior housing projects. Upon retiring, he moved with his wife to Cove, Utah, and resided near his son and family. He served on The Board of Review and as a Committeeman and Institutional Representative for Boy Scout Troop 44 of Danielson from 1967 – 1972. He was a Deacon and member of the Property Committee of Westfield Congregational Church. He was a lifelong member of the VFW, and served two terms as Quartermaster and two terms as Post Commander of the Byron Caroll Harrington VFW Post 4908 of East Killingly. He enjoyed tending his vegetable gardens every summer, building furniture pieces for his family, and playing golf. Besides his wife he is survived by his son Laurens Henry Smith, Jr., and his wife Carol of Cove, Utah; daughter Cynthia Marshall of Danielson, Connecticut; and daughter Allison Haley and husband Patrick of Longmont, Colorado; and grandchildren Ethan and Clara of Cove, Utah. He is also survived by his sister Nellie Gould and husband James of Swansboro, NC., and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers: Leonard, Clifford, and Robert and five sisters: Julia Wade, Louise Trinque, Mildred Fisher, Ruby Smith, and Dorothy Kerr. He was also predeceased by son-in-law Frederick Marshall. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at a later date.
