WELLSVILLE, UTAH: LaVern Brown Maughan died Tuesday, June 21 at her home
in Wellsville. She was born in Hyrum, Utah in 1912,
the eighth child of Israel Smith Brown and Stella
McBride Brown. Her father died when she was four
years old and her mother when she was eleven, at that
time she went to live with her sister and
brother-in-law, Blanche and Hershall Bradshaw in
Wellsville. After graduating from high school she
attended a business college in Salt Lake City for one
year.
She married Archie Walters Maughan in 1932 in Salt
Lake City. The marriage was sealed in the Logan
Temple. Their home was blessed with four children:
Jeanine M. Pond (Martin) of West Lafayette, Indiana,
Kathryn M. Pond (Delwin) of Salt Lake City, Jerald
Maughan of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Lynn Maughan
(deceased).
Music was an important part of their home, as they
practiced or just gathered around the piano to sing.
LaVern had a great love for books, Music, and enjoyed
writing. She was always active in the church, serving
in stake and ward auxiliaries, she also directed the
ward choir, served as an officiator in the Logan
Temple, and completed a proselyting mission in the
Dallas Texas Mission. She did volunteer work in a
Mendon nursing home and also served on a music
committee for Founders Day Patriotic Meetings.
She is survived by fourteen grandchildren and 34
great grandchildren and a number of nieces and
nephews.
The family expresses deep appreciation to Life Path
Hospice Family Care for their loving and devoted
service.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on
Saturday, June 25, 2005 in the Wellsville Stake
Center. A viewing will be held on Friday evening from
6 to 8 PM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary and prior to
services on Saturday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30
AM. Interment will be in the Wellsville City
Cemetery.
