LaVor Lindhardt Smith, age 89 of Hyde Park, passed away peacefully at home on July 13, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was born May 6, 1924 in Winder, Idaho, the oldest child of Ingram Fuhriman Smith and Lorene Lindhardt.
LaVor attended Winder Grade School and graduated from Preston High School where he excelled in the Future Farmers of America and received the State Farmer’s Degree. He attended Utah State University prior to serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II (1943-1946).
LaVor married his childhood sweetheart Viva Swainston in the Logan LDS Temple on October 5, 1944. They celebrated their 68th anniversary last year. Following World War II they lived in Preston, Idaho until 1951 when they purchased a dairy farm in Lewiston, Utah where they raised their family and resided for 57 years.
LaVor’s life has been dedicated to serving his family, fellowmen and especially youth. He served as scout master for 25 years and received the Silver Beaver Award; as bishop of the Lewiston 3rd Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; as director and president of the Cub River Irrigation Company and as mayor of Lewiston City for two terms. LaVor and Viva served as missionaries in the Nigeria Aba and Mississippi Jackson Missions and as Logan Temple ordinance workers for 12 years.
He enjoyed working on his computer doing family history, organizing community and scouting records, and creating things for others to enjoy like word maze puzzles and personalized birthday cards for his grandchildren.
LaVor is survived by his wife Viva, their seven children, LaVor Lindhardt Smith, Jr. (Karen Cole), Nampa, Idaho; Glade Swainston Smith (Debra Pitkin), Smithfield, Utah; Gerald Alan Smith (Judy Ann Smith), Lewiston, Utah; Dee William Smith, Bellingham, Washington; Judy Smith Tripp (Scott P. Tripp), Richmond, Utah; Steven Curtis Smith (Kim Brenchley), Pleasant Grove, Utah and Kirk Ingram Smith (Cathryn Davis), Brigham City, Utah; 25 grandchildren; 41great-grandchildren; brothers Leness Lindhardt Smith (Barbara Cafferty), Nampa, Idaho and Grant Joseph Smith (Gail Hobbs), Idaho Falls, Idaho; and sister-in-law Anna Swainston Condie, Preston, Idaho. LaVor was preceded in death by his sister Connie Jean Smith Thomas, Laura Tripp (granddaughter) and Reilly Ross Smith (great-grandson).
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the Hyde Park 3rd/10th Ward LDS meeting house, 42 West 200 South, Hyde Park, Utah under the direction of Bishop Phillip Hale. Viewings will be held on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Allen Mortuary of North Logan, 420 East 1800 North, North Logan and also on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the meeting house.
