Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, LaWana Jensen Kirby, passed away comfortably at her home on Jan 31, 2014 surrounded by her immediate family.
LaWana was born to Clifford and LaVera Christensen Jensen on Nov 13, 1934 in Bear River City at her parents’ home. She grew up in Bear River City and loved life on the farm, especially eating the fresh garden vegetables. At the age of seven, she contracted polio and was treated at Primary Children’s Medical Center. She overcame the challenges and obstacles of polio to live a happy and productive life with her family. She graduated from Box Elder High School in 1952 and then worked for Central Chevrolet in Brigham City as a bookkeeper for five years. In 1956 while attending a semester at USU she met Reg D. Kirby and they were married in the Logan Temple on Aug 8, 1956.
Reg and LaWana built their home and life in Brigham City where they raised their four children. She was blessed to spend the majority of those years raising her family. Later, for a number of years she worked first as a dispatcher then as a civil secretary for the Box Elder County Sherriff’s office. With a keen interest in law enforcement it pleased her to be able to serve her community. She was very talented and enjoyed many activities including sewing, quilting, crocheting, gardening, cooking and listening to her children and grandchildren practice the piano.
LaWana is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in various positions including several years as the Relief Society President in the Brigham City 8th Ward. In 1985 Reg and LaWana moved to Cache Valley to retire, and have lived in Providence since.
LaWana is survived by her husband, Reg D. Kirby, her sons David C. Kirby (Cathrine Litz), Mark E. Kirby, her daughters Pauline Kirby, Louise K. Tobey, her most cherished grandchildren KC, McKelle, Brandon Tobey and her siblings Geniel (Bud) Bell, Myrna (Norvel) Humphreys and Miles (Janet) Jensen. Her parents Clifford and LaVera Jensen preceded her in death.
Our family would like to extend a special thanks to Julie, Angie, the staff of CNS Hospice and the office of Steven S. Salisbury MD. A memorial service will be held on Feb 3, 2014 at 11 am at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E Center, Logan UT.
