Lee Leo West, 80, while surrounded by his family, passed away quietly at his home November 12, 2008, due to complications from Alzheimer’s.
Lee was born September 7, 1928 on Turtle Mountain Chippewa Indian Reservation near Belcourt, North Dakota. He was the son of Margaret Hayes West and John Stranberg West.
His childhood was spent on Turtle Mountain. However, life became hard when he became an orphan at the age of fifteen. In 1946, Lee with limited education, funds, and the country in war times, joined the Navy. He was proud of his service on the USS Bremerton. While serving in the Navy, Lee developed his skills as a Boxer. He became the Navel Force feather weight champion in 1947.
Lee married Anna Ruth Maggers in 1947, they had one son. He later married Virginia Dawn Hamel and they were the parents of four boys and one girl. In March 1966 Lee married AnnaLue Roskelley Rogers, the mother of seven girls. Later, they completed the ultimate “Yours, Mine, and Ours” family with the birth of three more boys.
Lee was a Barber for a short time in Great Falls, Montana. Then he tried his hand at Smelter work in Anaconda, Montana. However, he spent most of his time as an Ironworker, where he worked on such projects as the Castle Dell (Utah) Power plants and the walking drag Line at Point of Rocks (Wyoming). Finally, he spent eight years working at Thiokol before retiring in 1992.
Lee’s favorite things to do were building things, especially for the grand kids. He enjoyed singing while he played his guitar. He also loved sports of every kind, and even coached many little league teams.
Lee is survived by his wife AnnaLue of Nibley, Sons- Tom West of Bremerton Washington, David(Kathy) West of Orem, Russell(Dawn) West of Cheyenne Wyoming, Howard John(Shawna) West of Sandy, Tim(Barbara) West of Caldwell Idaho, Wayne(Tina) West of Salem Oregon. Daughters- Patricia(Russ) Rodgers of Heber City, Jerrilyn Bingham of Preston Idaho, Denice(Louis) Hoppie of Richmond, Julia (John) Brewer of West Valley, Jackie(Casey) Privett of Duchesne, Tami(Robert) Murray of Richmond, Jean(Brad) Mather of Amalga. He has fifty-four grandchildren and fifty-three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Kenneth, and his sisters Bernice and Venila. Children- Jim West, Robert West, LueAnn Nelson and six grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held 2 pm Saturday Nov. 15, 2008 at the Allen Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan.
Friends and family may call Friday from 6-8 pm at the Allen Hall mortuary and Saturday from 1-1:45 p.m.. Interment will be at the Millville Cemetery. Condolences and thoughts may be expressed to the family online at www.allenmortuaries.net .
