He was born on June 20, 1932 in Farmington, UT to Owen and Mary Ellis. He married the love of his life, Marilyn, on September 18, 1952 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

He went on to earn a Ph.D. in Physiology from Oklahoma State University and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Utah. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he served as Bishop, High Councilor, and in the High Priest Group leadership. He found great joy from serving others.
