Leon was born in Grover, Wyoming on April 9, 1930 to John Francis Astle Jr. and Laura Thelma Carling. He was one of 5 children born to Laura and also had 5 half siblings. Leon grew up in Star Valley Wyoming where he met Blanche Linford. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple on November 23, 1955. They spent most of their life together in Logan, Utah and are the parents of 4 children. Laurie (Gordon) Thorpe, Cherie (David) Stoddard, Sandra (Larry) Tolley and Kevin (Lori) Astle. Kevin passed away from cancer when he was just 28 years old. Blanche and Leon have been blessed with 17 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.
Leon was the school bus driver when he was only 14 years old. He also helped with his dad’s logging business and worked for local farmers. He served an honorable mission to the Western / Northern States Mission from October 1950 to October 1952. After that he served in the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Fort Ord, California and spent some time in Landstuhl Germany.
After he and Blanche were married he worked in Salt Lake City at Goodyear Tire. They then moved to Logan where he worked for a short time at Ward’s Tire Shop. He then began a long career with the Post Office in Logan. He was employed there for 30 years and retired in 1988. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for his entire life and served in many callings including service in several Bishoprics. Leon and Blanche served an LDS church mission at the employment center in Logan. He and Blanche donated often to family and ward members serving missions.
Leon and Blanche both enjoyed traveling. They owned several motorhomes over the years and traveled to almost every state in the US and most of North America including Alaska. One of Leon’s favorite trips was a family trip to Hawaii in 1998. They were leaders in a travel/camping group called Old Ephraim and had many great friends that they camped with. They also had opportunities to travel to other countries including parts of Europe and Central America.
Leon was a hardworking, considerate husband and father. He was also a great neighbor serving in any way he could. He often shoveled snow, raked leaves and paid visits to those he cared about. He provided this service without fanfare or desire for recognition. He also loved collecting tools, knives, stamps and coins. He has large collections of each. He loved a bargain and enjoyed buying items he thought others would find useful. His family and friends were often the recipients of great finds from Harbor Freight and Deseret Industries. A legacy of flashlights, measuring tapes, headlamps and other useful items can be found in the homes of family and friends.
