It is with mixed emotions that we announce the passing of our mother on March 20, 2025. Despite facing numerous health challenges over the past 15 years, she endured them all with strength and determination.
Lila was born on April 30, 1937, to Charles Frank and Olive Maddox Hoth in Logan, Utah. She was the third of six children, and she shared a close bond with her siblings. She grew up in Logan, attended Logan City Schools, and graduated from Logan High.
In the spring of 1956, Lila met Melvin J. Thompson. Mel had been serving as an LDS missionary and was a missionary companion to her two older brothers, DeVerle and Jay. Mel saw a picture of Lila and he confidently told them, “When I’m done here, I’m going to go home to Utah and marry your sister.” True to his word, they were married in the Logan LDS Temple on September 28, 1956.
Lila was selfless in her service to others and dedicated in her church callings. More than anything, she loved her children and grandchildren. In the early 1970s, she and Mel also opened their hearts and home to five foster children. Later, she worked as an office manager in several local physicians' offices, where she processed insurance claims and formed life-long friendships. She retired earlier than planned to help care for her grandchildren, whom she lovingly spoiled. She also provided tender care for Grandma Peru (Mel’s mother) in their home for several years.
An exceptional cook and baker, Lila loved making delicious meals and treats for her loved ones. Decorating wedding and birthday cakes became her hobby, and each grandchild received unique, specially crafted birthday cakes when they were young. She also compiled a cookbook for each grandchild, filled with her favorite recipes—including her famous sugar cookies, which will continue to be a cherished tradition. She also enjoyed crocheting hot pads and sharing them with many friends and family over the years. Mel would ride his Jazzy all the way to the craft stores to get Lila yarn that was on sale. She specifically held back eight hot pad sets to make sure each of her grandkids got her last ones.
Lila is survived by her three children: Brian Thompson (Christi), Darwin Thompson (Lori Loppmow), and Teresa Seeholzer (Jeff); her eight grandchildren: Alex, Emily, Kendal, Jessica, Joshua, Jacob, Ian, and Autumn; and 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her three brothers: DeVerle Hoth, Raymond Hoth (Kathleen), Valden Hoth (Ann), and sister-in-law Genice Hoth and brother-in-law Larry Liljenquist. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, infant granddaughter (Melissa), brother Jay Hoth, sister Charlene Liljenquist, and sister-in-law JoAnn Hoth.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Richard Stevens for his kindness and dedicated care for both Lila and Mel for the past 10 years. Special thanks also to the RNs and CNAs at Legacy House for their care of Lila during these past few years and to the Sunshine Home Health and Hospice team.
Neither Lila or Mel wanted a viewing when then passed. They always said together, “We’ll have none of that.” However, as her children and grandchildren, we will celebrate mom’s life (and keep it short, at her wishes). Friends and family may join us on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Allen-Hall Mortuary at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at the Logan City Cemetery.
Lila's legacy of love, service, and family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed, but we take comfort in knowing that she and Mel are together again.
