Lincoln Haws McClellan
Logan - Lincoln Haws McClellan, 98, of Logan, passed away peacefully in his sleep and joined his beloved eternal companion, Dorothy, on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013.
He was born Nov. 15, 1915, the eighth of 10 children to Charles Eli and Josephine Haws McClellan in Hinckley, Utah. The family moved to Logan in 1921, where he attended Logan city schools, graduating from Logan High in 1932. During that summer, he began dating Dorothy Quinney, whom he courted until she finally gave in. They were married for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple on June 27, 1938, by the temple president, her uncle, Joseph Quinney Jr. During those courting years, they both attended and graduated from Utah State University. Their home was blessed with six children: four boys and two girls. Unfortunately, the first two children - twin boys - passed away at birth.
Lincoln was always very active in sports and pursued this love with a degree in physical education from USU. He was the boys physical education instructor and coach at the Logan Jr. High from 1936-1956, and until this day he is still affectionately referred to as "coach." During those 20 years he received his master's degree from the University of Oregon in 1942 and served in the Army from 1943-1945. While at the junior high Lincoln received national recognition for his intramural program and open houses. During the summers he helped run the Logan city softball program and assisted with local tennis tournaments. He accepted a position at USU in the Health, Physical, Education and Recreation Dept. in 1956 - serving also as the tennis coach for many years. In 1963, he completed and received his doctorate degree from the University of Oregon.
Lincoln retired from USU in 1981 and enjoyed working in the yard, going on fun trips with Dorothy and visiting family.
A lifetime, active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many leadership positions, including several bishoprics and as a high councilman. From Jan. 1982 to June 1983, he and Dorothy served a mission in the Mesa, Ariz. Temple Visitor's Center. They began working in the Logan Temple as ordinance workers in 1984 until 1992 when Dorothy's health prevented them from continuing. Sadly in June 1994, Lincoln lost his beloved companion and continued on by himself, supported by his loving family.
He is survived by his children Cheryl (Webb) Peterson, Mike (LeAnne), Kent (Susan), and Denise (Ralph) Olson, 25 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren.
Dad was preceded in death by Dorothy, his sons, Lynn and Lincoln, all of his siblings and their wives, and his beloved parents.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at the Logan Seventh Ward chapel, 565 E. 100 South, Logan. There will be a viewing prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in the Logan Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Allen-Hall Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, Dad would have liked us to donate to the Cancer Society or the Primary Children's Hospital.
