Lois Britzell Smith (1922 – 2009)
LOGAN, UTAH: Lois Britzell Smith, with her husband Dean dearly holding her tired hands, passed away on October 31, 2009, in the Logan Regional Hospital. After many years of failing health, Mom finally is at peace.
Lois was born on June 3, 1922, to parents Oscar and Florence Olsen Britzell. Lois’ twin sister Doris Thorpe and her older sister Faye Dunn both live in Logan. Lois’ parents and brothers Don Oscar and Oscar Merle (Spike) preceded her in death.
Lois grew up in Logan attending the Logan City school district graduating from Logan High School in 1940. She enjoyed life living in the Island area and was active in sports claiming the Logan City Badminton Championship in 1947 and 1948. She went on to win the State of Utah Singles Badminton Championship plus teamed up with Glen Worthington to win the State of Utah Doubles Championship. Lois enjoyed all kinds of sporting activities and played 2nd base for a local softball team sponsored by a restaurant fondly remembered as “Heb’s Pig Stand”. The team was coached by Dean R. Smith who apparently made the right pitch to Lois and they were married on June 14, 1942, in the Logan Temple. Lois attended Utah State and worked on the campus switch board and also worked as an operator for Mountain Bell. She became a skilled artist working for Max Brunson Studios where she performed “color tinting” to pictures before color film was invented. However, her best talent was giving unselfish service to her family. Mom is famous for her family gatherings and activities; which happened just about every Sunday. Both children and grandchildren love to visit Grandma Lois’ house. She always had everyone’s favorite candy bar and ice-cream. Her Rueben sandwiches, minced-meat (square pies) and “put-put” pies are legendary. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter were holidays spent with Grandma Lois because she made everything perfect. She is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and held various positions in Relief Society and Mutual Improvement Association (MIA).
Lois is survived by her husband Dean, their five children Linda (Vern) Dabb of Ogden, Marcia (Wayne) Merrill of Willard, Jim (Suzanne) Smith of Providence, Michael (Terri) Smith of Layton, and Tab (Brenda) Smith of Providence. She was also very proud of her 16 grand children and 28 great grand children.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday, November 5th, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary. A viewing will be held that morning from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery. Condolences and memories may be sent to the family at
