Longtime Rancher/Farmer Passes Away
Loran R. Andersen
Loran Rawlin Andersen, 91, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2012, at his home, from
complications of a stroke.
He was born December 28, 1920, in Hyrum, Utah, to Hans P. Andersen and Anita
Nielsen Andersen. He was raised in Hyrum and Blacksmith Fork canyon, always riding
his horse to and from Hyrum. Later, he met Ida Green from Wellsville, UT, and they
were married on June 5, 1942, in Paris, ID.
They started their life together on the family farm, ranching, farming and trucking. He
was one of the first haulers of dairy heifers to Hill Air Force Base, to be flown to Alaska,
for those people to start dairy farms. He was a long-time hauler of livestock throughout the United States. He even hauled buffalo once to the Salt Lake Airport. In the day, Loran hauled a lot of sheep from the desert to the mountains. He owned his own sawmill, curing and cutting his own
boards for all of his buildings on his farm, as well as his own rack on his truck.
Loran loved horses and always took pride in owning the best looking horses. They
always won at showmanship shows, as well as pleasure riding shows. He became
interested in cutter racing in the 1960s and won many a race with his horses. He was vice
president of the Smithfield Skyline Cutter Association from 1968 to 1969.
He was an excellent steward of his lands, making sure his ditches and surroundings were
clean from weeds. He won the Resource Conservation Award for Blacksmith Fork in
1992.
His greatest love was when he had his horses loaded and was headed to Promontory Point
to work with his cattle on the range. He loved herding them, digging water holes and
'fencing. There is always something to do out there.
He is survived by his son, Rallin L. Andersen, wife Jean, of Logan; two daughters,
Dawna A. Cook, husband Randall, of Logan, UT; and, Coylene A. Martin, Idaho Falls,
ID. He is survived by his brother, Larry Andersen, wife Ludene, ofOthelo, Washington.
He leaves behind eight grandchildren, 14 great-grand children, and two great-great
grandchildren.
Great thanks goes out to Rocky Mountain Home Care, for taking such excellent care of
Loran. A special thanks goes to Lisa and Nancy, the special angels.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida; three sisters, Valerie Osborne, Merle Hull, and
