Dr. Louis Linden Madsen, Jr. returned to his heavenly home on Thursday morning, May 16th after a courageous 5 year battle with cancer. Born to Dr. Louis L. and Edith Madsen in East Lansing, Michigan, Louis spent his formative years between the greater Washington D.C. area and Logan.
As a young man, Louis’s greatness was clearly seen on the football field as he played center and linebacker for Logan High, then later for his beloved Utah State Aggies. Engaged to be married during his LDS mission to the US Gulf States, he returned and married his high school sweetheart Karen Larsen (of Logan) in 1959.
Louis joined the Air Force after completing dental school and was assigned to Travis Air Force Base as a Captain. He retired from military service and established a dental practice in Fairfield, CA that he ran for over 44 years. Beloved by his thousands of patients, he was often referred to as a “Gentle Giant” and a “Minister of the Mouth”.
Louis and Karen raised their six children in Fairfield at their beautiful Dover Ave. home. He served faithfully as an LDS seminary teacher, Bishop, High Councilman, counselor in the Stake Presidency, and later Fairfield Stake President; always with his dear wife at his side. He is often remembered for adding his personal experiences to his many church sermons. His favorite callings were anytime he could teach and share his life-long testimony of the gospel for Jesus Christ. He loved Fairfield and his countless friends there. Amongst his favorite memories were playing softball at Lee Bell Park and boating at Lake Berryessa. Lou and Karen then retired to Cache Valley to support their Aggies and renew the many friendships of their youth.
A master storyteller, Lou had the ability to make everyone he knew feel like they were the greatest person in the world. A champion of all, he was always your biggest fan. This ability was even greater if you were his wife, child, grandchild, or sibling. There is nothing he loved more than his family. His example of faithfulness and loyalty will be counted as a large of part of his legacy. Both traits he would credit to learning from his beloved father Louis, Sr.
His is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Karen Larsen Madsen of Hyde Park, children Louis L. III (Tami) Madsen of River Heights, Cindy (Brent) Frame of Albuquerque, Robert Madsen of South Jordan, Chris (Becky) Madsen of Hyde Park, Patricia (Mike) Henderson of South Jordan, and Emily Madsen of Salt Lake City, 22 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the many doctors that have cared for him during his treatment along with the incredible nurses at Logan Regional Hospital. An extra special thanks to Dr. Ryan Holbrook of Spokane, WA and Riley Clark of Rocky Mountain Care.
A viewing will be held Monday May 20th from 6:00-8:00 PM (Allen Mortuary, 420 East 1800 North, North Logan). Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 21st starting with a family viewing from 10:30-11:30, and funeral at 12:00 PM at the Hyde Park 6th Ward (535 East 200 South Hyde Park).
