Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Lucile Lundstrom Ferguson, 83, passed away on August 7, 2009 at Logan Regional Hospital after a brief illness. She courageously battled rheumatoid arthritis and its complications for most of her lifetime.
She was born May 18, 1926 in Logan, Utah to A.G. Lundstrom and Selma Olsen Lundstrom. Her father was mayor of Logan for 14 years and owner of Lundstrom Furniture Store in downtown Logan. She married Gordon Lee Schvaneveldt on September 11, 1946. They were later divorced. She married Edward A. (Ted) Ferguson on October 20, 1972, Ted’s wife dying of cancer in 1969. The Ferguson’s and Schvaneveldt’s had been friends for many years. She graduated from Logan High School and attended Utah State Agricultural College, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She worked for Intermountain Theatres, starting when she was 16 years old, until she joined the firm of Utah Mortgage Loan Corporation in 1951 and continued there until 1967.
That year she was approached by Curtis L. Miner, Cache County Treasurer, and she accepted the position as deputy treasurer, second in command in the treasurer’s office. In 1976, Mr. Miner retired and the Cache County Commission appointed Lucile to finish his two-year term, making history by becoming the first woman to be treasurer in Cache County. She had followed her father’s footsteps into local politics. In 1978, she ran in her first election and was unopposed. She ran unopposed again in 1982 and in 1986 won over her opponent by a landslide. Lucile’s sweet and caring service to the community made her almost unbeatable. In 1984-85 she was elected vice-president of the Utah Association of Counties, in addition to her duties as county treasurer. In 1992, her fourth term in office, she reluctantly retired to spend more time with Ted and their children. She had worked for almost 50 years at the time of her retirement.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many Church callings including Relief Society and Young Women’s. She enjoyed being a visiting teacher, and served as Stake Camp Director for many years. She was loved by all who knew her and by those who came in contact with her. She loved to knit and crochet and all her family members received beautiful afghans, Christmas stockings, and other items. She once created little baby bonnets which were sent to children in Ethiopia.
Survivors include her husband, Edward A. Ferguson of Logan, her children Ann Nemerouf (Nikki) of Whittier, CA, Janet Smart (Lorin) of Wallsburg, UT, Jean Taylor of Farmington, UT and stepchildren Scott Ferguson (Allyn) of Logan, UT, Leslie Maughan (Steve) of Nibley, UT, and Brad Ferguson (Rhonda) of Santa Clara, UT, 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 11 at 12 p.m. in the Northwood Ward Chapel at 125 East 500 North in Logan.
