Lyle E. Holmgren lived a full and rewarding life, satisfying as to family, friends and service. He counted himself most fortunate on all accounts. He passed away on Monday April thirteenth at age 101 and three quarters in the comfort of his own home.
Born June 22, 1913 in Bear River City, Utah to David and Hilda Nelson Holmgren, Lyle was the sixth of nine children. His life claimed a farm background. His family moved to Tremonton when he was five years old. There he went through the grades, graduating from Bear River High School in 1932.
Attending Utah State Agricultural College, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1936 with a double major in Business Administration and Accounting. He was a leader among students, active in student affairs and cultivated many friends. He not only participated as a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Kappa Psi Honorary Business Fraternities, but also served as President of the Alpha Kappa Psi Social Fraternity his graduating year.
For four years he served as Chief of the Audit Section: State Office of Agricultural Adjustment Administration, a federal program to assist farmers to overcome depressed prices for wheat and beet sugar.
He joined the army as a Volunteer Officer Candidate (VOC). He served four years in the European Theater of Operations during WWII in Anti-Aircraft Artillery, retiring with the rank of Captain. He spent seven years in the Organized Reserve Corp following the cessation of the war.
He was certified by the Utah National Guard “Americanism Up Front” Seminar and served as member. Following that he became Chairman of the Selective Service System in Cache County during the Vietnam War. He was a member in good standing in Post 12, American Legion and a past member of Logan Rotary. He was active in Jaycees and the Cache Chamber of Commerce, serving as the Chamber President in 1956. He was known around town as “Mr. Republican”.
Lyle and his first wife Gayle Nielsen owned and operated The Gift House, a retail gift and craft store. Gayle preceded him in death in 1968. He later met and married Phyllis Budge Broadbent (Fee), daughter of Dr. and Mrs. S.M. Budge. Lyle and Fee had homes in Logan, St. George, Bear Lake, and eventually made their home in Smithfield where they retired.
Lyle was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served as a High Priest and in various church callings. He was very involved in the scouting program and earned the rank of Silver Beaver. His interests lead to genealogy, and temple work.
Lyle’s hobbies included writing poetry and short stories, crossword puzzles, golfing, fly fishing and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife Fee, three stepchildren, Lynn B. Parrish (Scott), Adrian B. Lundgren (Kent), Clay A. S. Broadbent (Lisa), twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents David and Hilda Holmgren, three brothers and five sisters, Wayne, Daryl, Warren, Ethel, Phyllis, Winifred, DeEsta and Floy.
Lyle’s family will remember him by his cheerful demeanor, unprecedented attitude, and his example of determination to live every day of this life as a gift.
A viewing will be held at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street in Logan on Thursday April 16th from 6 to 8 in the evening. Funeral Services will be held at the Mortuary on Friday April 17th at noon, with a viewing prior from 10:30 – 11:30. Burial with military honors will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
