North Logan resident Ethel Mae Crookston Wennergren, 84, died of natural causes Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at Logan Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
"Mae," as she was known to friends and family, was born in North Logan on May 9, 1927, the youngest of six children of Newell James and Ethel Magdalene Smith Crookston.
She graduated from South Cache High School before marrying John Anderson Wennergren on April 30, 1946, in Ogden. After moving around while John was in the Army, they settled in Soledad, Calif., in 1957, but they still spent their summers in North Logan or at their cabin up Logan Canyon. When John retired in 1986 they moved to North Logan and built a home on land homesteaded by Mae's grandfather, Nicholas Crookston. She lovingly called the place "The Hysterical Farm."
Mae was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was Relief Society president, taught Primary, gave piano lessons, was a Cub Scout den mother, was active in the Parent-Teachers Association and belonged to the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the Booklore Club. She was an accomplished painter and pianist, excellent cook and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her husband; her brother, Douglas Crookston (Farris); five children, John (Mindy) Wennergren, Kenneth (Patricia) Wennergren, Michael, Lawrence and Thomas; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday at the LDS Chapel, 1650 E. 2600 North, North Logan. Friends are invited to the viewing from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will follow at the Logan City Cemetery.
