Marcus Avery Cockerham passed away 9 October 2011 at his home in Logan, UT at the age of 28. He was born 3 June 1983, in Alexandria, Virginia, to Nola Johnson and Gary Cockerham. At a young age he moved with his parents to Rio Rancho, NM where he earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light Award. He later moved to Thatcher, UT in 1994 where he obtained his Eagle Scout Award.
He attended BRHS in Garland, UT where he enjoyed being a theater techie and a member of various choirs. He received the BRHS Sterling Scholar Award for Drama in 2001. His love of, and capacity for learning enabled him to earn multiple scholarships to USU where he graduated magna cum laude in 2010 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He also minored in Math and Computer Science. At USU he continued expressing his love for music by participating in several choirs, including University Chorale, LDS Institute Choir and the American Festival Chorus. He furthered his education by serving honorably in the Nebraska Omaha Mission from 2004 to 2006. In 2009, he earned his amateur radio license with the FCC so that he could help in an emergency. He worked as a civilian engineer for the U.S. Air Force at Hill AFB until this semester when he started working on his Master’s in Electrical Engineering at USU funded by the Air Force’s Palace Acquire program.
Marcus married his loving eternal companion and best friend, Pierco Ann Pitcher, of Cornish, UT in the Logan Temple on 22 December 2007. They were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Lucinda Ray Cockerham, who was born 23 July 2010. He adored his little girl and loved to introduce her to the world and how it works.
His grandmothers Mattie Ray Cockerham and Alice Cheney Johnson preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife and daughter; parents of West Valley City; sister Alice (Richard) Lemon of Brigham City; sister Kate Cockerham of West Valley City; grandparents Carlton and Dessie Cockerham of Covington, VA; grandfather Norman Johnson of Dayton, ID; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is also survived by his very special in-laws: Ralph and Dawn Pitcher of Cornish; Adam (Dayna) Pitcher of Ames, Iowa; Lance (Kate) Pitcher of Logan; Tyler (Lacey) Pitcher of Smithfield; and Sara Pitcher of Cornish.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday 14 October at Logan 16th Ward Chapel, 600 N. 125 W. in Logan, UT with a viewing from 10:30-11:45 am. Interment will be in the Cornish Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary.
