Margene Nielson Stringham

June 11, 1929 — May 17, 2023

Margene Nielson Stringham, age 93, passed away May 17, 2023, in Logan, Utah. She was born to Ernest Elbert Nielson and Lavina Day Nielson in Hunter, Utah, on June 11, 1929. She married Glen Evan Stringham on August 31, 1953, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Margene received a bachelor’s degree in music in 1950 from BYU. Later in life, she received a second bachelor’s degree, this one in history, in 1985 from Utah State University. In 1988 she received a master’s degree in history from USU. Although she had all of this education, she was mainly a stay-at-home mom throughout her life, after their first child was born. She did, occasionally, work at some part time jobs. She had also worked part time while in high school and at BYU, to earn money for college and for her mission.

Margene was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served a mission in the Ontario Canada area from 1950 to 1952. Later she served with her husband in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, from 1979 to 1982 when he was the mission president. She also served with him on a mission to the church’s 115,000-acre farm in Australia for 18 months, starting in 1998. And then she served again with him on a mission to Damascus, Syria, for 18 months, starting in 2000. They also served together on a part time mission from 2004 to 2009 on many clean water projects for the church throughout the world. Margene served as a Primary president, a Relief Society president, and a Young Women president, plus many many other callings. Her callings were mostly music, being the organist or pianist or chorister. She loved being the pianist in Primary.

Margene enjoyed living in Colombia and Honduras where Glen worked to help upgrade the irrigation in those countries. She also enjoyed visiting many other countries because of various reasons and opportunities. At home she enjoyed her association with several different groups of friends, including belonging to Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She was very outgoing and would easily strike up conversations with people wherever she went in the world.

She especially enjoyed close associations with her family and extended family. Margene was preceded in death by her parents, and her sisters, Laverne, Alta, Lola, Leone, and Phyllis, one grandson, Nathan Stringham, and one great-granddaughter, Kalinda Robertson. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Glen, and her children, Glenene Robertson (Richard), Millville, Utah; Gary (Valerie), Boise, Idaho; Dwight (Sherri), Centerville, Utah; Denene Loosle (Byron), Sparks, Nevada; 23 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren.
