Margene S. Hurst

August 16, 1921 — December 30, 2010

Mendon, Utah-Margene Schaub Hurst, 89, passed away peacefully at her home Thursday, December 30, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was born August 16, 1921 in Logan, Utah to Mary Ann Gilgen Schaub and Eugene Schaub. She grew up in Logan, the eighth of ten children, born to immigrants who came from Switzerland after joining the LDS faith.

Margene attended Logan High School and graduated in the spring of 1939. She attended Utah State and worked for Bell Telephone. She married Clyde Fae Hurst on March 23, 1942 in the Logan Temple. This was during WWII and she would be separated from him for years and months at a time. During these days she lived in Utah and California.

After WWII they settled in Portland, Oregon while Clyde attended dental school. After graduating in the spring of 1949, they returned to Logan to continue raising their family and start a dental practice. Over the last sixty-one years they have had homes in Logan, North Logan, and Mendon.

A devoted homemaker, Margene loved sewing, quilting, cooking, and canning. In the fall time you could always count on the vivid smells from the kitchen while she canned all kinds of fruit and vegetables. She also enjoyed playing the piano and organ and particularly doing so with a grandchild at her side. Margene was a happy person with a good sense of humor and a contagious laugh. She enjoyed the outdoors with her husband and children and participated in many ski and pack trips in the mountains. She also enjoyed the many visits to Bear Lake and returning to the California Ocean. She loved animals and sold or gave away many litters of puppies and kittens over the years.

Margene loved traveling and enjoyed visiting many different places. One of their highlight trips was when Margene and Clyde had the opportunity to travel to Switzerland and see where both sets of her grandparents had lived before immigrating Utah.

Margene was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a strong testimony and love of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She served in many positions over the years. In 1995, Margene and Clyde had the opportunity to serve an LDS mission in Hartford, Connecticut. While there they helped many people and made many friends.

Margene is survived by her husband of 68 years, Clyde, and children; Clyde R. (Diane) of Golden Valley, Arizona; Gordon of Las Vegas, Nevada; Kathleen (Tom) of Mendon, Utah; Stanley (Linda) of Millville, Utah; Edwin (Leslie) of North Logan, Utah; and a sister Kolleen Whittington of Vanuys, California. She is preceded in death by a daughter in law, Theresa, and by five sisters; Edwina, Ruth, Phillis, Vesta, and Myra, and three brothers; Leland, Conrad, and Frank. Margene has twenty grand children and thirty-nine great grand children.

The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of Community Nursing Services for their kind and loving care of our mother and to many others who’s devoted efforts and love will always be remembered.
