Marjorie Lucille Chandler Hoffman

September 14, 1917 — June 29, 2013

Marjorie Hoffman
Logan, Utah: The last of the Chandler girls rode off to the Bull Mountains of Montana, on June 29, 2013.
Marjorie Lucille Chandler Hoffman (known as Nurse Hoffman, Aunt Marge, Mother, Mom, Mum and Granny) passed away gracefully like a lady should.
She was born to awesome parents, John and Ethel Gorsline Chandler, September 14, 1917 in Billings, Montana. Mother was raised in a four room ranch house with a sod roof. The four rooms were always filled with love. Her brother John and sisters, Eleanor, Ruth, and Lois were her constant playmates. When the weather was good, they rode their horses to a one room school house. If the weather was bad, then they were treated to a sleigh ride. Mother and her siblings were encouraged to get an education and leave the ranch. Barely out of high school, she left with a small trunk and four hundred dollars. She had borrowed the money from an Uncle. She was on her way to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to pursue her R.N. She worked her way through nurse’s school and graduated with honors. One of her teachers suggested that she accompany her to Logan, Utah. Mother helped establish the Budge Nurse’s school and worked as a surgical nurse.
While in Logan, she met the dashing C. R. “Cap” Hoffman. They both loved to dance. Dad swept Mother off her feet. They were married January 17, 1942. When Dad was drafted into the Army, Mom followed him to Texas, where he finished his training. Cap was sent to North Africa and Europe where he served. Mom went back to Helena, Montana, to be with her mother.
At the end of WW II, Mom, Dad, and John settled in Logan. Mother continued with her nursing career at the Budge Clinic on Main Street and then Fourth North. She also worked at the hospital on the hill where Cap and the boys would join her for a picnic lunch on her break. She then became the head nurse at USU where she worked for 25 years. “Is the nurse here with the white hair!”, the students would ask as they came into the health center.
She is survived by her two sons, John and Tom (Karen) Hoffman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cap and all of her siblings. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Shelley Hoffman. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will hold in their hearts the great times they had with Grandmother and Grandfather.
Her newest family Karen Meacham Hoffman were instantly charmed by her grace and beauty. She was a hit again. She always remembered everyone and had a special smile for each. In the last years she became very close to her daughter-in-law Karen. She loved those cinnamon rolls.
“She is my Aunt Marge not yours”, her beloved niece Kaye announced when someone at the shop called her Aunt Marge. Kaye was magical with Mother. She just knew what to say and Mother would relax. What will we possibly do without Mother?
Our special thanks to Pam and Courtney, Shalise and Heather. You are the true epitome of what nurses are all about. Many many thanks.
