Marjorie Wright

With convincing bravery, Marjorie Palmer Wright returned home on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 surrounded by her children and her husband of 55 years. She was born in Ogden, Utah on July 22, 1941 to Durward and Dorthea Orth Palmer. Marjorie and sister Arlene (Chris) Thurgood, and brothers Grover (Jean) Palmer, Lyle (Karen) Palmer, and Lige (Debbie) Palmer, they lived a carefree childhood on a farm nestled against the green rock mountains of Park Valley, Utah. After graduating from Steven Henager’s Business College, she married her Navy Sailor, Donald “Uncle Wiggly” Leroy Wright on November 22, 1961. They were later sealed together in the Hawaii Temple.

Dad and Mom enjoyed a life of service in the Navy and developed a love affair with Hawaii and the Polynesian people. Along the way, they had six children:  Kayelani “LaniKaye” Huff, Julie “Dewey” (John) Clawson, Alan “Buck” Wright, Karie “Karl” (Brent) Johnson, Chad “Piskie” (Melissa) Wright, and Marianne “Marimannie” (Bahy) Rahimzadegan. She considers Marlene Fogel and Reuel (Lisa) Huff as her adopted children.  She is preceded in death by her parents.

Mom is remembered for orchestrating many a family vacation and party. One oft remembered vacation was a trip in a blue Gran Torino with children and an electric skillet. Mom’s frugality left a trail of tripped hotel breakers from Utah to New York. Once, she planned a girl’s trip to see Celine Dion perform. The trip was filled with laughter and illness. Let’s just say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. She was an accomplished seamstress and a student of all things fabric and thread. She canned fruit, quilted, crocheted, knitted, tatted, cross-stitched all while rolls were rising and cookies baking. Each holiday was a time to adorn her home with many handmade crafts. Throughout her life, she found time to volunteer for the Red Cross, serve in many church callings (Spiritual Living Teacher was her favorite), and be a faithful visiting teacher. She and dad served missions in Washington, Korea, and Hawaii and the Layton LDS Employment Center. She left a legacy of courage, compassion, and love of family and of her Savior. We’ll never forget her humorous sayings - may the bird of paradise fly up your nose, ooooooo eeeeee, oh my Stars and Roman garters, goodness gracious Gertrude and cool your jets

She is affectionately known as Grammy to Cyrus, Kadence, Andrew, Spencer, Marcus, Kaelynne, Cache, Cheyene, Ty, Tanner, Trevor, Jaxon, William, Emily, Madelyn, Carson, Holden, Makenzie, Kylie and Kevin. Her grandchildren have memories of late-night trips to McDonalds, sitting on her lap at the sewing machine, jumping on the bed, grocery trips to the stores that had pint-sized shopping carts, decorating cookies, throwing Easter eggs, receiving homemade pajamas at Christmastime and hiding snakes in her bed.

In February 2016, upon returning from a mission to Hawaii, mom sustained a brain bleed due to a fall. Over the course of the past year, she fought to regain strength, relearned to swallow, walk, talk and even open her eyes. Her determination made it possible for her to live for a brief time with Julie’s family. However, it became necessary for full-time care, so mom lived her remaining days under the tender and watchful care of Fairfield Village in Layton. To the many nurses and doctors and caretakers at both IMC and Fairfield Village, we say thank you. A viewing will be held Sunday, June 4 between 6-8 at the Robbins Park LDS Chapel, 60 West Gordon Rd., Layton. Her funeral will be the following day, June 5, at noon at the Cache Stake Center, 280 W 1200 N Logan, Utah. A short viewing will be from 10:00 to 11:30 prior to the service.
