Mark Romero Hargreaves

January 29, 1954 — December 8, 2022

Mark Hargreaves, 68, of Logan, passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2022 in Logan, Utah.

He was born January 29, 1954 in Port au-Prince, Haiti to George and Sara (Romero) Hargreaves, the fourth of six children. His father’s work as an engineer for the United States Agency for International Development took the family around the world, and Mark grew up in Costa Rica, the Philippines, Brazil, Columbia, and the Panama Canal Zone. George returned stateside and became a professor at Utah State University when Mark was 16.

Mark attended Logan High School and Colorado State University, then graduated from Utah State University in 1975. His career in the Army Medical Services Corps began with an ROTC commission as Second Lieutenant. He served honorably and well and was justifiably proud of his service to his country. He was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany with Bravo Company, 64th Support Battalion and then in Augsburg, Germany with the 5th Station Hospital. In 1983, he separated from the Army at the rank of Captain and returned to Logan to complete an MBA at Utah State University.

Mark worked as a Financial Advisor for the United Service Planning Association and Independent Research Agency (First Command) in San Antonio, Texas, and then Stuttgart, Germany. In 1994, he earned a JD from Saint Mary’s University in San Antonio, where he practiced law until 2003.

He then returned to Logan to care for his parents in the last years of their lives, allowing them to be together at home until they both died peacefully, a few weeks apart, in 2009. During these years he became close to his devoted partner Carolyn Farrell, who was also caring for her aging parents at the time.

Mark was an active member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and the Rotary Club of Logan, and a generous friend to many in the Logan community. He also served on the board of Hope for the Children, volunteering his bookkeeping and investment expertise to Santa Maria del Mexicano, a home for poor, orphaned, and abused children in Querétaro, Mexico.

Mark had a particular gift for sharing his knowledge of sound financial practices with young people, so that they could build a strong foundation for their lives.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two older brothers, Ronald and Henry, and survived by his partner, Carolyn Farrell; three siblings: Margaret Stolpmann, Sonia Hart, and Leo Hargreaves; their children and grandchildren, who all enjoyed visits to Logan with their beloved Uncle Marco; the extended Romero family of Honduras; and many friends.

His family would like to request that in lieu flowers a donation to the following organization would be
most appreciated.

Challenge Endowment Fund, Logan Rotary Foundation, PO Box 9, Logan, Utah 84323
Funeral services and burial with military honors will be held in the spring in the Logan City Cemetery.
