Marlin A. Fife

October 26, 1924 — July 8, 2016

SMITHFIELD - Marlin Albert Fife, 91, passed away July 8, 2016.

Born October 26, 1924 in Logan, Utah, Marlin was the only child of Albert James Fife and Eva Barbara Miller of Weston, Idaho. He was raised by Mary (Miller) and Andrew Nyman after his parents died before his 2nd birthday. He attended Logan’s Woodruff School, Logan Jr. High, and Logan High School. Marlin pursued his education further and graduated from Utah State University and the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons in Los Angeles. He later specialized in anesthesia.

When it was time to marry, he chose well. Marlin was sealed to Merle Mary Burt of Clarkston, Utah in the Logan Temple on December 20, 1946. They were well matched and married happily for 54 years. Marlin and Merle had 5 children.

Marlin practiced medicine in the San Diego area for 40 years. He performed 40,000 anesthetics over the course of his career. His hard work provided a comfortable living for his family. He enjoyed returning to Utah for annual fishing trips and taking vacations in the motorhome throughout the western states with Merle and the children. He was an avid golfer and belonged to the San Diego Country Club.

Marlin was drafted into military service during WW II from July, 1943 to February, 1946. His assignment was working in ground communications for the Air Force in France.
Marlin was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served as Bishop and high councilor for many years in the Chula Vista, California Stake. Marlin and Merle loved the years they served together as temple workers in the San Diego Temple.

Upon Merle’s death from leukemia in June of 2000, Marlin returned to Cache Valley and lived in Smithfield. He became reacquainted with a classmate from Logan High, Thelda Larsen Covington. They were married in the San Diego Temple on July 19, 2001. Marlin and Thelda lived in Smithfield and enjoyed traveling to Texas and San Diego. She supported him patiently and lovingly through his later years as he battled age related health issues.

Marlin is survived by his 2nd wife of 15 years, Thelda Covington Fife, 5 children from his first marriage: Greg Fife of Dallas, Texas, Nanette (Norm) Boaz of Murrieta, California, Francine (Jim) McDade of Ceres, California, Jim (Sharon) Fife of Logan, Joseph (Sandra) Fife of Smithfield, 22 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, July 16 at the Smithfield Stake Center 600 E 120 S Smithfield, Utah. There will be a viewing from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Condolences and thoughts may be expressed online at www.allenmortuaries.net .
