Martha Louise Baker
Maggie passed away November 20th after a brief battle with lung cancer. Maggie was born to Marian and Leona Manderbach in Glendale, California. She grew up on and in the ocean, with a Boston Whaler instead of a bicycle. She attended Orange Coast College, then Northern Arizona University where she fell in love with Geology. She transferred to the University of Montana and graduated with a BA degree in Geology. She was employed by Pegasus Gold Corporation for 4 years before joining the US Forest Service in 1989. She worked as a geologist responsible for mineland reclamation and abandoned mine cleanup in California, Nevada, Utah and Idaho. She had a gift for bringing different and often adversarial agencies and companies together to implement multi-million dollar cleanup projects. Many of the people she worked with have become lifelong friends.
Maggie loved animals and usually shared a home with at least one adopted dog. Her current ward was a chocolate brown pointer named Mocha. When she wasn’t being manipulated by Mocha, she loved to cook. She always knew where to find the freshest produce. Maggie met Fred and they married in 2008. She did her best to increase his vegetable intake. She enjoyed cooking occasions and steadfastly refused to serve students pizza. She also was a wonderful home decorator and enjoyed making the house a home.
Maggie is survived by her husband Fred, her sister Julie (Phil) Bay, a niece and a nephew. She also leaves behind her beloved pointer Mocha, and two step dogs Obee and Lars.
The funeral services will be held Monday November 28th, 2011 at 5:00 PM at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Hyde Park (725 South 250 East). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Cache County Humane Society. Condolences may be sent to the family at
