LOGAN, UTAH: Martha Ryland Jarvis, 86, peacefully passed away at home Monday July 26, 2010, with her husband of 61 years by her side. Martha was born in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas, May 16, 1924 to James Robert and Virginia Hudson Ryland. She grew up the baby sister to two sisters and a brother, her sister Nancy Williamson still resides in Pine Bluff, predeceased by Marion Love and Robert Ryland and both parents. She graduated from Pine Bluff High School and Hendrix College before leaving the small town behind and moving with best friends to New York City where she was the private secretary to the President of West Virginia Pulp and Paper before falling in love with the boy that lived across the street in Pine Bluff.
Martha and James A. Jarvis were married at Pine Bluff First Presbyterian Church October 16, 1949. They were married on a Sunday because the Arkansas-Texas A&M game was on Saturday. Even in October it was warm enough that the candles in the sanctuary wilted in the heat. One year later, October of 1950, Jimmie and Martha having lived in Pueblo CO, moved to Logan UT where they made life long friends, built a successful business and raised three boys; Jim Jr,(MaryKae) daughters Virginia and Amber, Colorado Springs CO; Bob, (BK) Gallatin Gateway MT, daughter Tollie; and Ben (Mary)Hyde Park UT, son Ryan and daughter Nicole Griffin(James, daughter Mikylee). Martha always took pride in keeping a clean home, having dinner on the table at 6:00pm, being home for her kids and their friends. She was an excellent cook and loved to have dinner parties where she would entertain friends and relatives. Martha was a charter member of PEO, played a viscous hand of bridge with several groups including The Smoking Mothers early on. She enjoyed Study Guild and loved to prepare and give book reviews pertinent to her heritage. Martha was responsible for many cub scouts getting their Webolos, providing the Sunday flower arrangements, and chopping by hand lots of onions for the food booth during her 60 years at Logan First Presbyterian Church. A memorial service, the Service of Witness to the Resurrection, will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday July 30, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church, 178 West Center, Logan UT, with a dedication of the grave immediately following at Logan Cemetery. Please remember Martha as you sit down to a home cooked dinner with your family. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the First Presbyterian Church Peace Garden, or the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Allen-Hall Mortuary, Logan.
