Marvin Ariel Traveller

February 24, 1929 — June 7, 2018

Marvin Ariel Traveller, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away on June 7, 2018 from an accident while walking the family dog. Marvin was born in Richmond, UT on February 24, 1929 to Ariel C. Traveller and Mardene Harris Traveller. He attended North Cache High School in Richmond where he was active in all sports, but truly loved baseball. He was drafted into the Army on November 13, 1950 and served in Fort Riley, Kansas in the 47th Engineer Camouflage Battalion.

After completing his basic training he returned home and married Jenis Hillyard, daughter of Roy W. and Rachel Tueller Hillyard, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 31, 1951. After their marriage Marvin and Jenis returned to Fort Riley to complete his military service. He was invited to play for his unit’s basketball team and later the baseball and six-man football teams.

They returned back to Richmond after his service commitment and started working for Sego / Pet Milk in Richmond in the can plant. After Pet Milk closed in May of 1968, Marvin started his insurance career at Metropolitan Life Insurance and later switched to Prudential Insurance. He retired from the Prudential Insurance Company in March 1995.

Jenis was diagnosed with cancer in October 1973 and passed away on January 2, 1976. Marvin met Gerri Hansen Muir, who had lost her husband to an accident. They were married January 14, 1977 combining his four sons with her four sons and one daughter.

Marvin served in many church and civic positions including, Mayor of Richmond from January 1978 through January 1990, bishop, missionary couple at the Bishops’ Storehouse for two and a half years, high councilor, temple worker and Young Men President. Marvin was a powerful force for good in all his endeavors. He blessed his posterity through his example and love. He was a very outgoing, happy, positive man who was loved by all those that came in contact with him. Marvin enjoyed providing service to his fellow men and his Heavenly Father, his country, his wife and family, and friends. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Gerri, his children; David (Janet) from Farmington, Utah, Dennis (Sheila) from St. George, Utah, Greg (Lori) from Richmond, Utah, Chris (Linda) from McPherson, Kansas, Bruce Muir (Mary) from Smithfield, Utah, Gary Muir (Elaine) from Vernal, Utah, Kim (Rodney) Zilles from Young Ward, Utah, Greg Muir (Karen) from Mendon, Utah and David Muir from Phoenix, Arizona. His siblings, Nancy Hillyard, Luann Tripp, Kay (Jana) Traveller, Bart Traveller, Seth (Gaylene) Traveller and Kenneth (Jeanie) Traveller. He has 25 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jenis Traveller, brother-in-laws Morris Hillyard and Robert (Dell) Tripp and sister-in-law Charlene Traveller.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Friday, June 15th at the Richmond 3rd Ward Chapel, 135 West Main in Richmond. A viewing will be held from 6-8 pm on Thursday evening at the church in Richmond and from 9:30 am prior to services at the church on Friday. Interment will be in the Richmond City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Marvin's name.
