Mary Allen

October 25, 1916 — July 14, 2014

Elva Mary Knowles Allen, age 97, passed away July 14, 2014, in Logan, Utah, surrounded by family.

She was born in Pocatello, Idaho, October 25, l9l6, to Clarence William and Isabell Myler Knowles. She was the fourth of eight children, spending her youth in Pocatello, Idaho and Ogden, Utah. Upon graduating from Weber High School she went to work for Pacific Fruit and Produce Company in Salt Lake City where she met her husband, Stanton Lee Allen. They were married July 19, 1939 in Ogden, Utah. They had been married for 63 years when he died in 2002.

They moved to Logan in 1939 to work for Pacific Fruit. Stan managed the branch and Mary worked part time in accounting. Later she worked several years for Dr. Reed Broadbent. Except for a year in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Logan was Mary's home until 1982 when they moved to Hyde Park, Utah.

Mary’s greatest service and joy has always been with her family and religion. Active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of her life she served in the Primary, MIA, and Relief Society. She also served for 10 years in the Logan Temple and treasures the friends she made there. She will be happy to meet lifelong friends she and Stan made in the Amo Vita Club.

Mary has always stressed the importance of family and family reunions. Her home was always open to numerous relatives and friends who enjoyed her hospitality and wonderful meals. She and Stan grew a large garden every year and nothing ever went to waste. She set a great example by caring for her ailing mother in her home for 7 years until her death at age 100.

Mary has two children, David Allen (Judy) of Hyde Park and Sharron Lindsay (Val) of Orem, 12 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She loved them all.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and three sisters, Hazel Brady, Ruth (Owen) Gladwell and Reva (Carl) Wallis. She is survived by two sisters, Helen (Marcus) Stephens, Ogden and Evelyn (Gerald) Melchin, Calgary, Alberta; two brothers, Elmer (Shirley) Knowles, Provo, and Clarence William Knowles, Portland, Oregon.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Thursday, July 17th, in the Hyde Park Stake Center, 535 E. 200 South, Hyde Park, Utah. Family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Stake Center. Burial will be in the Logan City Cemetery. Funeral directors are Allen-Hall Mortuary.
