MARY ALLEN NIELSEN
A very special lady, Mary Allen Nielsen 96, passed from this life on Tuesday Morning, March 12, 2013 at Terrace Grove in Logan, Utah. Mary was born on Valentine's Day February 14, 1917, the second child of Victor J Allen and Harriet Letitia Dunn Allen. She was so proud of her heritage and had many stories to tell her children and grandchildren. Her great grandfather was Ira Allen who was one of the founders of Hyrum. One of her grandmothers, Finnetta Williams, was the first white child born in Hyrum. Her father, Victor built the first in- house bathroom in Hyrum and his father thought he was being foolish to do such a thing.
Mary and Andrew Vincent Nielsen went together for 3 Y2 years and then decided they should get married. On November 21, 1935 her parents took them to the Temple in Salt Lake City and there they were married by Apostle George L. Richards and then her parents took them back home. Except for 8 months in Ogden and a short time at Laguna Beach, California on a Marine Base, they lived their lives in Hyrum. The family was most important to Mom and she worked so hard and sacrificed so much for them.
Mary was an owner of the infamous Kanyon Komer Drive Inn in Hyrum. After that she went to South Cache middle school as an associate teacher of 7th grade English and really liked working with the students. She worked there for 12 years and at 70 decided to retire. During that time she and dad would take turns with another couple staying up Blacksmith Fork canyon taking care of the park and the power plant. As a family we loved the mountains and spent a lot of time up there. Mom was honored by Hyrum City as Golden Citizen and she and dad were honored as Honorary Citizens.
Mary had a very strong testimony of Jesus Christ and the gospel and tried to instill that in all her family. She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held about every position there was. She was also organist for all the different organizations and would accompany Vince on the violin and played for many programs. Mary loved everyone and never said a bad word about anyone. She always went the extra mile to make all of her family feel loved and always would say they were all hers.
Mary loved to quilt and crochet and she made many quilts for her family. All of the children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and a lot of the great great grandchildren were given a quilt and some crocheted items she had made. She loved to read and that was really hard for her when her eyes got so bad she couldn't see to read or to quilt or any of things she loved to do. She didn't complain but said she was thankful for the good health she had up until the very last.
Mary is survived by her 5 children all of which live in Hyrum: Marilyn Nye, Alan V. (Julie) Nielsen, Lester D. (Judy) Nielsen, Trudy K. (Jeffrey) Hancey, and Craig L Nielsen (Lisa). Her loving posterity which consists of 20 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren and 21 great great grandchildren, She is also survived by 1 brother; Lamont (Janet) Allen, 1 sister-in-law Elsie Schuster and 1 brother-in-law Ernie Nielsen and many nieces-and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 6} years who passed awayMarch 3, 1999, her parents, 2 brothers Jay and Aseal Allen and 2 sisters Finnetta Pedersen and Letitia Anhder, baby sisters Janetta and Ruby, 1 grandson and 1 step great grandson.
Mom was a very special person who had lots of patience and understanding, love and devotion for her family. She said many times how wonderful and caring the people at Terrace Grove were to her and we are so thankful to them for taking such good care of our mother. We all dearly love that lady and will miss her smile but we know she is in a better place, healthier and happier.
