Mary June Bowcutt Thorson

June 20, 1934 — November 22, 2022

Mary June Bowcutt Thorson made her departure from this life on Tuesday, November 22, 2022.
Born on June 20, 1934, to Joseph Henry Bowcutt and Emma Blau Bowcutt in Wheelon, Box Elder County, Utah.

The family moved to Logan, Utah where she attended school and graduated from Logan High. After a year of college, she went to work as a secretary at Hill Air Force Base. It was during this period that she met and married Grant Thorson. The couple moved to Logan where Grant attended Utah State University, obtaining a degree in forestry while June worked as a secretary at the Bee Culture Lab.

June and Grant had four daughters, Laurie, Lisa, Julie, and Karen. With a career in the Forest Service the family lived in some of the most remote as well as beautiful places in Southern Utah and Central Idaho. June was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was constantly in service to the Church in the small branches and wards where the family lived. Her favorite callings were primary teacher and ward chorister.

In 1978 June and Grant separated and June moved to Hyde Park, Utah with her three younger daughters. One of the greatest gifts of June’s life was to be hired as the secretary at the Smithfield LDS seminary. Her relationships with the staff and students at the seminary were some of the most important of her life. She became known to all as “Sister Seminary”.
She retired after 20 years at the seminary and served a mission at the Church Office Building in Salt Lake.

June’s heart was huge. Countless people have called her house “home” and she wrote so many college term papers for struggling students she could have graduated many times over. She always had her trademark flower in her hair, a smile on her face, and an optimism that never wavered. She loved square dancing, travel, nature, and mostly her family. She was the much loved “Grandma June” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is proceeded in death by Grant and her daughter Laurie. She is survived by her sisters Jean Colton and Vida Gines, daughters Lisa, Julie (Lynn) Hansen, Karen (Lance) Buxton, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a multitude of others who she loved as her own.

The funeral will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, November 28, 2022 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary at 34 East Center Street, Logan. A family viewing and prayer will be held at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Hyde Park Cemetery.

… I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
…. Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
