Mary Ann McArthur, our loving sister and aunt, passed away on December 11, 2009 in Logan, Utah.
She was born November 25, 1929, in Logan, Utah, to Stephen Lester and Lulu Corbridge McArthur. She grew up in Logan attending its grade school, junior high, and graduating from Logan High School. She graduated from nurses training in 1951 and from Utah State University in 1953. She received training at the TB Sanitarium in Ogden, Denver's Children Hospital, and psychiatric training in Pueblo, Colorado. Following her graduation she worked as head nurse on the Medical Floor at Logan LDS Hospital.
Mary Ann served an LDS Mission in California. Upon her return she worked as Surgical Floor head nurse and part-time supervisor at the hospital. She later became Acting Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing, and then Director of Nursing-a position she held for 20 years.
In the Nurses Association, Local Level District six, she held all offices, including president of the district on two separate occasions. She was honored as Nurse of the Year and was elected to the Utah State Nurses Association for two different terms and three times was elected to attend the National Nurses Association Convention as a delegate from Utah.
While Director of Nurses, she was instrumental in starting the Child Birth Education Classes and the volunteer organization (Pink Ladies and Candy Stripers). She worked on a committee to get a nursing school back in Logan. Because of this effort, Weber State College was assigned by the Utah System of Higher Education to offer an Associate Degree Nursing program in Utah. Weber State University, through USU, started the prograrp which is alive and well today.
She became Assistant Administrator of the hospital and was in charge of justification, building, and purchasing equipment for the new Logan Regional Medical Hospital. She worked on designing the new Patient Care Room that would be private for patients and meet insurance for billing as a semi-private
room. She helped in creating the OptiCare Room in the new hospital, which gave privacy without the cost of a private room. She acted as a consultant to Design West for the building of six small hospitals-five in Southern Utah and one in Tremonton.
Mary Ann served as Service Director for the American Cancer Society in Cache County for 15 years, which included serving patients and families with cancer. She was a member of Soroptimist International of America holding all offices in the local chapter as well as being a regional delegate for many years.
She was a charter member of the Logan Medical Federal Credit Union and served on the Loan Committee as an elected volunteer for 34 years. She also served on the Board of directors as its chair and vice chair. She served on the Cache County Red Cross Board and was responsible for Health Services and AIDS education in Cache County. She served as a teacher in all organizations of the LDS Church and worked in the Logan Temple for 13 years.
She is survived by her brothers and sisters: David McArthur of Smithfield Utah; Ruth (Charles) Johnson, Fruit Heights, Utah; Richard (Norma) McArthur, North Logan, Utah; and Laura (Leslie) Balls,Hyde Park, Utah; along 19 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister-in-law, Dee Ann McArthur.
Thanks to the staff at Legacy House Assisted Living and her many wonderful friends at Legacy House. The services of IHC Hospice are deeply appreciated, especially to Debbie who showed such loving care and concern.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 15 at the Hyde Park Stake Center, 535 East 200 South in Hyde Park. A viewing will be held from 6-8 PM on Monday, December 14 at the Allen Mortuary of North Logan, 420 East 1800 North in North Logan and from 9:30-10:30 AM prior to services at the stake center.
