Mary LePerle Welch Smith

Mary Smith, 85, returned to live with loved ones gone
before her on Thursday, September 29,2005. She passed
away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Sunshine
Terrace.

Mary was born on August 29, 1920 in Salt Lake City,
Utah, the daughter of Pearl Snow and Jesse Evard
Welch. As a teenager, she moved with her family to Los
Angeles, California, where she later married and
raised her five children. She was a wonderful wife,
mother, and grandmother.

Mary served in many positions in the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. She also found time to
volunteer to teach ballroom dance to many young people
in the community. She was employed as a dance
instructor for many years and also worked as a medical
secretary. Mary was honored to be the Los Angeles Area
Mrs. America. Later she was also honored to join the
Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.

Mary married Howard Norman Smith and became "Mary
Smith" (which made her laugh!) on October 18, 1975 in
Garden Grove, California. After Howard retired, they
moved to Wellsville, Utah which has been home now for
twenty-five years.

A very lovely and talented lady in many ways,
especially in music; she could play-by-ear the piano
and organ. She loved the old Hollywood stars and
movies, and dolls of all kinds, which she liked to
collect. She always loved to "leave you laughing"! Her
sense of humor, and warmth and love, are joys we'll
always remember.

She is survived by her husband, Howard N. Smith;
daughter Valerie Jean Turk (Fred) of Mojave Valley,
Arizona; son Paul Gandy (Jan) of PIano, Texas;
daughter Anita Myers of EI Cajon, California; sister
Marjorie McGregor of Littleton, Colorado; brother Jay
Welch (Marcelle) of Salt Lake City, Utah; brother
Robert Welch (Della Mae) of Los Angeles, California;
brother Theodore Welch (Marilyn) of Beaverton, Oregon;
sister Bonnie Waite (Wendell) of Las Vegas, Nevada;
sister Catherine Welch of New York City, New York;
step son Howard N. Smith (Magi) of Ridge crest,
California; step daughter Susan Cito (Gary) of City of
Industry, California; step son Craig Smith (Annette)
of Logan, Utah; step daughter Sally Haymond (Gary) of
Yucca Valley, California; and grandchildren. Mary was
preceded in death by her mother, father, and step
mother, Mildred Welch; brother Gerald Welch; brother
William Welch; son Randall Scott Tincher; and daughter
Donna Ruth Johnson.
