Mary Sorensen Simmonds, 87, passed away on December 23,2005, in Logan after a long illness.
Mary was born June 11, 1918, in Cornish, Utah, and was the fifth child of Lorenzo and Sarah Sorensen. After graduating from North Cache High School, she attended the Collegiate School of Beauty in Logan. She married Arthur Simmonds on May 5, 1938, in the Logan LDS Temple. The couple spent the first years of their marriage in Cornish and Tooele. They moved to Lewiston in 1949 where Mary lived until just a few years ago. Art passed away in 1982.
Mary had many talents. She was an excellent seamstress, cook, candy maker, and homemaker. She liked to read and worked for several years as an aide at Lewiston Elementary School. An active member of the LDS church, Mary held many positions including counselor in the Relief Society and Primary and Single Adults Representative from her ward. She loved going to the temple, visiting with friends and neighbors, musical programs, and Utah Jazz games.
Mary is the mother of one son and three daughters. They and their spouses are Richard and Janice Simmonds, Salt Lake City; Kathleen and Gerry Ellis, Colorado Springs, CO; Marilyn and Pat Barnes, Roanoke, VA; and JoAnn and Clair Marler, Lewiston. Mary is the grandmother of fourteen and great-grandmother of twenty-two. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Roy; three sisters, Neta, Katie, and Sadie; a granddaughter, Jozette Marler Campbell; and a great-grandson, Kyler Leishman.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, December 29, in the Lewiston 1 st Ward LDS chapel, 10 South 1600 West, Lewiston, with Bishop Michael Stephenson conducting. A viewing will be held at the church prior to the funeral from 10:30 to 11 :30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Lewiston City Cemetery.
