Matie Steed Griffin, 89, passed peacefully from this life in the company of loved ones on September 1, 2015.
Born on December 30, 1925 in Ogden to Gerald Miller Steed and Catherine Potgeiter, Matie was raised in San Francisco, California, where the family had relocated to pursue her mother’s operatic career.
Matie’s fondest early memories were listening to her mother rehearse with the San Francisco Opera and playing in Golden Gate Park and fishing from the pier at Fisherman’s Wharf. Matie graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1943 and was recruited her senior year by Wells Fargo Bank, where she held the position of teller until the end of World War II. She met her future husband and companion of 67 years , Julien, in the Sunset LDS Ward in San Francisco. The two were married in the chapel at Lake Merced. Three days later the marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Matie and Julien were the parents of four children. Valorie (Dredge), Gerald, Deborah (Brown), and James. Matie’s life quickly became focused on raising her children and providing a loving and beautiful home. Matie was an active, life-long member of the LDS Church, serving in a variety of important callings including Stake Relief Society Work Leader. Her creativity, enthusiasm and love for people were admired by all who met her.
She was a beloved figure who enjoyed a wide circle of diverse friends. In later years, Matie returned to Wells Fargo as a Personal Banking Assistant. Many of her clients in the Bay Area became her close personal friends. After retirement, Julien and Matie traveled extensively, and ultimately retired to Julien’s boyhood home of Logan, Utah.
In their later years, Julien and Matie formed many close relationships with ward members, relatives and old friends, living in the River Heights and Quailbluff areas of Logan. Matie was preceded in death by three months by her beloved Julien. Matie is survived by her children, 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center in Logan, Utah. There is no viewing scheduled, however, visitation with family members is planned for the hour preceding the services. Bishop James R. Chambers, Quailbluff Ward is officiating.
