Maughan Wadsworth McMurdie, 79, died at St. Mark’s Hospital in Salt Lake City on Friday, July 20, 2007, after complications from an infection.
Born in Logan, Utah on February 16, 1928, Maughan was the third child of Geneva Wadsworth and William Evan McMurdie, Sr.
After serving an LDS mission in South America, primarily Uruguay, Maughan married Dorothy June Jepson of Provo in the Logan, Utah Temple on December 29, 1952. During their marriage, they performed extensively together. Maughan also served in the United States Air Force.
An accomplished singer, pianist, performer, and composer, Maughan received his bachelor’s degree from Utah State University, his master’s degree from Brigham Young University, and worked on his doctoral degree at the University of Washington in Seattle. He and his family then moved to Macomb, Illinois in 1969 where he worked at Western Illinois University as a professor of music for nearly 25 years.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Maughan was well known for his work as composer and musical director of “City of Joseph,” an outdoor historical musical performed in Nauvoo, Illinois for 29 years. He also composed “Christopher: A Musical of Discovery” commemorating the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage to the new world.
Maughan is survived by his five children: Judith M. (Ray) Nielsen, Aloha, Ore.; Lori M. (Lloyd) George, Shanghai, China; Greg M. (Carrie) McMurdie; South Jordan, Utah; M. Shaun (Kristie) McMurdie, Spanish Fork, Utah; and Shelley L. McMurdie, Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, and his sister Renee McMurdie.
Maughan is also survived by three of his siblings: William Evan (Maxine) McMurdie, Jr., Logan, Utah; Kay Louise (Keith) Tilley, Kaysville, Utah; and Janet Diane (Robert) Wilson, Pullman, Wash.
Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, July 26, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan, Utah. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, or at 10:30 a.m. before the services. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Maughan and Dorothy McMurdie Music Theater Scholarship Fund at Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois.
