LOGAN, UTAH: Maurice Harris Welsh, 84, passed away May 21, 2010, in the Logan Regional Hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was born December 10, 1925, to Bernard and Eileen Harris Welsh, in American Fork, Utah. He spent his youth in American Fork where he learned the value of hard work and tenacity. He graduated from American Fork High School in 1944, and was a Wing Back on the All-State Football Team.
After high school graduation, Maurice was drafted into the United States Army. His service took him to Europe and he completed his tour of duty as a guard at the Nuremberg trials in Germany. After an honorable discharge, he attended Utah State University where he earned a Bachelors degree in Business. He started his own construction company, Welsh Enterprises, Inc. During his career, he designed and built 91 custom homes in Cache Valley between 1950 and 1983.
He married Ethel Jones on June 16, 1947, in the Logan Temple. To this marriage three children were born, Larry, Linda (deceased), and Roger. Maurice and Ethel were also foster parents to Lorenzo Costello, Doniele Valiente, and Marcos Valiente. Ethel passed away in 1983. Maurice married Elizabeth (Bettie) Towner in 1985.
Maurice was a devoted and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served in several Bishoprics, as a High Counselor, and as a Bishop. He and his wife, Bettie, served in the Washington DC North Mission.
He was known for his infectious laugh and smile, his willingness to assist others in need, as a master craftsman with special attention to detail, and for his beautiful white hair. His six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren think he is the greatest grandpa on earth.
He is survived by his wife, Bettie, his sons, Larry (Sharen) Welsh and Roger (Connie) Welsh, and four stepsons, Stephen (Patricia) Towner, Richard (Janet) Towner, Eric (Anita) Towner, and Mark (Carrie) Towner. He was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother, Gene Welsh, his wife, Ethel, and his daughter, Linda.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center. There will be a viewing at the mortuary, Tuesday evening, May 25, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, and from 10:30 to 11:30 am prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at the Logan City Cemetery.
