Maxine Allen Russell, our mother, grandmother and great grandmother departed this earthly life August 8, 2010 to return to her Heavenly Father, her family, and friends who went before her. Maxine was born January 14, 1918 in Richmond, Utah to Fernando Lowe Allen and Alta Chambers Allen. Maxine was particularly proud of her great Pioneer Heritage who played a significant part in the organization of the LDS Church, its migration, and the settlement of northern Utah.
She was raised in a very loving home with strong family values and a strong work ethic. At a very early age she began to develop her musical talents with the help of her father—a talent she used throughout the course of her life. She sang in the school musicals, college glee, and numerous civic, church, and social events. She spent two years at Utah State Agricultural College majoring in business and Home Economics.
In 1939, Maxine married Bert G. Russell and decided to devote herself to her husband and family. During their marriage, the family moved often, but Maxine remembers these times fondly, as she was able to use her singing talent, participate in many church activities, and share the gospel in many parts of the country. Also, during that time they were blessed with four children, and the family was sealed together in the Logan Temple.
The family finally settled in College Ward, where Maxine became the choir director. She served in that capacity for seventeen years, during which time the choir performed many special musical programs at Easter and Christmas. After her family was raised, Maxine returned to the work force, first managing a dress shop, and then over thirteen years with Walker Bank, now Zion’s Bank.
Her parents, her husband, and a sister, Orris May Hansen preceded her in death. Her three sons and a daughter survive her: Steven A. Russell, Robert A. Russell (Mary Jo), Bonnie Burris, Wayne A. Russell (Mary). Maxine is grateful for her 17 grandchildren and 40 great-grand children with more on the way.
There will be a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Friday, August 13, 2010 at the Allen Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center in Logan, Utah. The family has chosen to have a grave side service at the Smithfield Cemetery at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, we suggest a donation to the LDS Church Humanitarian fund. The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice for Utah for their service in caring for Maxine in her last days. Condolences and thoughts may be expressed to the family online at
