Hyrum, Utah: Melva Maxine Harris Buck, 88, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died Tuesday, Oct 20, 2009 at her home in Hyrum, Utah. She was born Sep 20, 1921 in Simla, CO., the eldest of 4 children to Everett Austin and Bertha McCoy Harris.
Melva grew up in Colorado until age 16 when her family moved to Ogden, Utah. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1939 and went on to Weber Junior College and then Brigham Young University. She met Rulon Wendell Buck through a blind date lined up by her best friend. They were later married in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on Aug 14, 1946.
Mom’s life work was her children and the Church. Rulon and Melva raised 8 children, served as Officiators in the Logan LDS Temple, served 3 missions together; one in St. Louis, MO, one in Ontario Canada, and one at the Family History Center in Logan. Mom served in many church positions throughout her life including Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society, Sunday School, & Primary; and supported her husband and children in all of their work, church & school activities. She was a long-time member of the Hyrum Literary Club and the USU Emeriti Association.
Mom always dreamed of finishing her Bachelor’s degree and in 1981 at the age of 59 she accomplished it.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband Rulon, her parents, and 1 of her brothers, Kenneth E. Harris.
She is survived by her 8 children: Sherman, Kathleen (Glenn) Voth, Sherleen (Denis) Cooper, Rosalie, Stuart (Sandra), Thomas (Connie), Lamont (Karlene), & Maxine (Curtis) Maughan; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers: H. Duane (Dona) Harris & LeRoy M. (Pat) Harris.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Hyrum North Stake Center, 245 Apple Drive. A viewing will be held on Sunday evening, October 25, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary at 34 E. Center in Logan and prior to services at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 PM.
