Melva Olsen Covey Miller
HYRUM, Utah – Melva Olsen Covey Miller, 81, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2005.
Born October 12, 1923, in Wellsville, Utah, to Thomas Adamson and Martha Archibald Leishman, she was the last of nine children. She attended Wellsville schools and graduated from South Cache High School in May, 1941. A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she fulfilled many callings, including teacher, dance director and member of the Primary Stake Board.
She married Wayne Wilson Olsen on September 25, 1941. They both worked the night shift at Ogden Defense Depot during the war. Then, they bought a farm and moved to Paradise with their three children. They were active members of the Hyrum Saddle Club. Wayne passed away September 25, 1957, and she moved her family to Hyrum. She worked as the secretary at South Cache High School and South Cache Junior High for 15 years. She was president of the Hyrum Civic Club.
She married William Norman Covey of Ogden on December 10, 1965. They lived in Hyrum and enjoyed doing temple work, dancing and traveling together. Norman passed away January 14, 1978. On January 8, 1981, she married Legrand Miller of Hyrum. They enjoyed many memorable events together.
Just a few months ago, her sister and best friend Barbara Brandon passed away. Melva greatly missed her frequent chats with Barbara about family and the Utah sports teams.
As a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by her husband Legrand Miller of Hyrum; her children, Dennis Olsen of Northridge, California; Karen (Clair) Batty of North Logan; Craig (Ruby Wass) Olsen of Ventura, California; 9 grandchildren, Rob Olsen of Moorpark, California, Jeff Olsen of Burbank, California, Bret (Lisa Spence) Holman of Smithfield, Jessica (Chris Glenn) Riggs of Providence, Nathan (Mindee Blair) Holman of Providence, Randal Holman of Logan, Shawna Olsen, Megan Olsen and Carly Olsen of Ventura California; and great-grandson, Jaxon Riggs of Providence.
Her love, caring and sense of humor will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was particularly appreciative to those who have given a helping hand in recent years and especially in the last few months.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers, 5 sisters, husband Wayne, baby girl Olsen and husband Norman.
The family expresses gratitude for the compassionate medical care and kind treatment that she received from so many during her final months.
Funeral Services will be held at noon on Friday, December 9, at Hyrum 10th Ward LDS Chapel, 111 North 400 West. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan, and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. Internment will be in the Hyrum City Cemetery.
