Mervyn L. Speth

December 17, 1920 — February 2, 2007

LOGAN, UTAH: Mervyn L. Speth, beloved husband,
father, and grandfather passed away Feb 2, 2007 in
Mesa Arizona surrounded by his loving family.
Mervyn was born on Dee 17, 1920 in Young Ward, Utah,
to Fredrick Wilhelm Speth and Elizabeth Laverne
Nuttall. He graduated from South Cache High School and
worked on and ran the family farm in Young Ward
throughout his youth and early married life. On Nov.
1, 1946 he married Viona Peterson in the Idaho Falls
LDS Temple. He served in World War II, the Korean War
and the Army Reserve. After 32 years of military
service he retired as a Colonel in the United States
Army. After his active military duty he moved back to
Utah where he owned and operated Merv's Conoco for 28
years. Those were the days of "full service" where you
could get your windows washed and your oil checked
while they filled up your gas tank. After retiring,
Mervyn and his wife Viona served an LDS mission in the
London England Temple where they served in the Temple
Presidency as 1 st Counselor and Matron. He also
served for 10 years as an officiator and temple sealer
in the Logan LDS Temple. He was an active member of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He
held many church callings and served with efficiency
and diligence. Mervyn and Viona have spent the last 17
winters in Arizona where they have made dear friends
and shared their love and friendship while having "fun
in the sun".
Merv enjoyed league bowling, golfing, tennis,
shuffleboard and was an avid USU Big Blue Club
Supporter for many years. He was a member of the
American Legion. He was a faithful supporter of his
grandchildren in whatever they were doing.
Mervyn shared dear friendships with many; his lifelong
friends in Cache Valley, missionary friends,
"snowbird" friends in Arizona, and Army friends across
the nation. Mervyn will always be remembered for his
hard work, dedication, service, honesty, sense of
humor, and love.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Viona P.
Speth, his children, Pam Kendrick, of Wellsville, Utah, Ray (Debbie) Speth of Gilbert, Arizona, Larry
(Maxine) Speth, of North Logan, Utah, LeAnn (Rod)
Lundberg of Brigham City, Utah, and Terry (Cheri)
Speth of Higley, Arizona, 12 grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren, and one brother, Gerald (Dora)
Speth ofIndianapolis, Indiana. He is preceded in death
by his parents, four sisters, one brother, and two
grandchildren.
