M. Ted Karren

LOGAN, UTAH: M. Ted Karren, 92, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2008 at Legacy House surrounded by family members. He was born September 12, 1915, in Lewiston, Utah, to George Rueben Karren and Hazel Pond. When he was three, his parents moved to Drummond, Montana.

Ted attended USU, where he majored in business. He was elected president of his sophomore and junior classes and as USU student body president during his senior year. In later years he served a term as president of the USU Alumni Association and concurrently sat of the board of trustees of the university.

He married Lois Mae Anderson in the Logan Temple on September 16, 1939. She preceded him in death. Ted and Lois had six children, Steven (Johnnie) of Logan, Gary (Joanne) of Logan, Dale (Janet) of Farmington, Lee (Kristen) of Logan, Diane (Jesse) Hunsaker of Alpine, and Kent (Wendy) of Eugene, Oregon. They have 27 grand children and 34 great grand children.

Ted worked for Shell Oil Company in Salt Lake City and Spokane, Washington, and then joined his father as a cattle buyer. In 1947 Ted and Lois returned to Logan where he spent the remainder of his career in petroleum marketing with the founding of Karren Oil Company in 1950.

Ted was active in local politics serving as chairman of the local Republican Party and as Cache County Commissioner for six years. He contributed to the community as a vice president of the Chamber of Commerce and president of the local Red Cross Chapter. He served a term as president of the Intermountain Oil Marketers Association and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Logan for many years.

Ted served as bishop of the Logan 20th Ward and counselor to Glen Baird, president of the Cache East Stake. He served as a high counselor, a temple worker for 20 years, and was a stake patriarch. He and Lois served as missionaries in the North Carolina Mission. They were ward dance directors and went square dancing almost every week until he was age 80.

He had a sense of humor. When asked by a friend, “It’s good to be alive, isn’t it?”
He responded, “I don’t know, I haven’t been dead yet.”

Ted enjoyed his relationships with people. He respected others and took time to listen to what people from all walks of life had to say. As a result he earned their friendship and respect. He was a good husband and father and enjoyed the love and respect of his family.

Funeral services will be held in the Lundstrom Park 3rd Ward located at 1260 North 1600 East on Saturday, August 9th at 11:00 am under the direction of Bishop Scott Hlavaty. There will be a viewing Friday from 6 to 8 pm at the Allen-Hall Mortuary in Logan and also from 9:30 to 10:30 at the church immediately preceding the funeral. Burial with be in the Logan City Cemetery.

The family extends appreciation to the staff at Legacy House for their care for Ted during the past year. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Perpetual Education Fund. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family online at www.allenmortuaries.net
