Norma Johnson

April 9, 1923 — February 8, 2014

Our beautiful Mother passed away Saturday, February 8th at Legacy House in Logan,
Utah. She lived to be 90 and left a magnificent legacy of love and family. Just last month
she was diagnosed with brain cancer. She quietly accepted the news with dignity and
grace, and passed peacefully and painlessly, surrounded by her two daughters and a
granddaughter.
Norma was born on April 9, 1923 in Cardston, Alberta, Canada to Henry Erastus Johnson
and Christobel Lillian Savage. She attended school in Taber, Alberta, and was married in
the Cardston Alberta temple to Mills M. Johnson where they had 4 children. They then
moved to the United States and added 2 more children to the family, where they lived in Oregon,
Washington, and finally Hyrum, Utah. They later divorced.
Although she did not complete high school for health reasons, at age 51, Norma
graduated from Utah State University with honors in Elementary Education, while
working full time to support her family. She worked most notably at the Bluebird
restaurant and KVNU as the traffic manager/receptionist for two decades.
Her love for music was gifted to each of her children in profound ways. We grew up
confident in ourselves because of her. She opened the door to a safe place for us to follow
our dreams. She loved reading, watching movies, dabbling in painting and poetry, and
those that know her best will affirm that she was fierce at Skip-bo and Boggle.
Her family and her faith meant everything to her. She was a faithful member of the LDS
faith, with a strong testimony of Christ carrying her throughout her life. This led her to
serve a temple mission in Washington, DC, and later to officiate in the Logan Temple,
which was her great joy through her later years. She was a teacher and a leader, known
for her quiet strength, listening ear, and silent acts of service, and loyal friendship.
She is preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, three sisters, and her son Kelvin.
Norma is survived by her children Taylor Hawke (known earlier as Richard Neil), Mills
Jr., Christine Larsen, Doug (known earlier as Kaylin), and LeeAnn Zappitello. Norma's
legacy includes 22 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
We express our profound gratitude to the Legacy House staff and PrimRose Home Care
& Hospice, especially Sandy, Allison, Tara and Monty for their gentle loving care in her
last days.
We will celebrate the life of our mother Norma Rose Johnson, and invite you to join us on Saturday, February 15th at Allen Mortuary, 34 East Center St. in Logan, Utah at 11 AM. A viewing will take place one hour prior to the celebration at 9:30-10:30 AM. Condolences and thoughts may be expressed to the family online at www.allenmortuaries.net .
