Norman Laverne Peterson was born in Erie Pennsylvania on February 26, 1942 to Norman Leverne Peterson and Evelyn June Van Stee Peterson. He had an older brother, Charles (Chuck) and a younger brother, Richard.
In his youth, Norm swam often in Lake Erie and played baseball. In one game he set a pitching record of 16 straight walks before a batter ended his streak with a hit. At age 9, he was a newspaper carrier for the Erie Times, earning eight dollars a week.
Norm’s family moved to Meadville, Pennsylvania when he was 12 years old. He attended Saegertown Area Junior/Senior High School in Saegertown, Pennsylvania where he was elected class president for 8th, 9th, 10th, and 12th grades. The highlight of Norm’s high school experience was playing trumpet in the high school marching band and being invited to perform the half-time show for the NFL/College All-star game between the Baltimore Colts and the College All-stars in Chicago’s Soldier FIeld in August, 1959.
Norm was baptized in the swimming pool at the local YMCA and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was a missionary in the Western Canadian Mission from 1961 to 1963. Norm had many callings in the church from scout leader to bishopric counselor. Even while on adventures, Norm would do whatever it took to fulfill his callings. He took the opportunity to attend church in whatever city or country he was in.
Norm had many interests and hobbies. He was active and adventurous throughout his life. When he wasn’t competing in triathlons, riding his bike, hiking, backpacking, traveling, sailing, skiing, or camping, Norm was meticulously planning an adventure to compete in triathlons, ride his bike, hike, backpack, travel, sail, ski, or camp. Some of his adventures didn’t turn out exactly as planned. Norm was in Hawaii with his two sons when Hurricane Iniki pounded the islands. He was in San Francisco during the earthquake in 1989. He was hit by a drunk driver while riding his bike. He hit a giant pothole in the road and broke his shoulder bone. But none of those things kept him down.
Norm (82) passed away on June 24, 2024, at his home in Elwood, Utah. He is survived by his children Julianne (Daryl) Hansen, Stephanie (Monte) Williams, Bret (Kelly) Peterson, and Whitney (Chloe) Peterson. He has 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Other loved ones include brother Chuck (Karen) Peterson, Julie Clark Peterson, Bobbi Peterson, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ivie Peterson, his children’s mothers Eileen Burbank and Linda Peterson, his brother Richard, and his parents Norm and June Peterson.
